I too had heard about the gumming up of needles and the terrible smell of the spray, but those rumors must have been related to something else than the 505 basting spray. Not a single little trace of glue on the thread or needle, not even microscopic ones, LOL! And, no smell at all once it has dried!

In my view, here's the pluses and minuses of the 505 basting spray:

Plus side:
- Far, far, far quicker than any other method I've ever heard of
- Secures every inch of the quilt sanwich, as opposed to leaving small areas unbasted between the pins
- Prevents all puckering because the layers don't shift at all
- Within a few hours of using the spray, you can reposition the layers until you're happy with them without having to "unpin" the pins
- No pins means nothing for the thread or the needle to get tangled up in!
- Saves your back, arms, and hands from the dreaded pinning experience
- Lasts a long time - I've used my can on three quilt tops by now, and there is still a lot left in the can!

Minus side:
