Simple unfancy sewing machines

I was just reading all the posts about what and how many sewing machines we all have. Most of us are really blessed

But what I wanted to say is that we forget that even the simple inexpensive machines can make beautiful quilts as well as our expensive machines. Sometimes, I am guilty of coming across as a machine snob, but the truth is this- it's the operator that controls the machine. A cheap machine from Walmart can put out a fabulous quilt also.

It's refreshing to hear from folks who are stitching away on their machines without a care in the world about what everyone else is driving,lol! Sew on! Whatever your drivin'..........Amie )

Both of my sewing machines are very inexpensive! My Kenmore I bought at Sears for I think $200.00 about 3 years ago. The other one I bought on e-bay for I think $50.00. Both work like a charm to me and I don't think I would use 1/4 of the stuff on those fancy ones! But then that is just me.

One of Kenmores that I make fabric bowls on was $15 at an auction! And, it's a great machine,too. Even bought a 1/4" foot for it, it's so quiet I can barely hear it running, Amie )

The "new" Singer I recently acquired is 87 years old. It was in a machine cabinet that I bought at an auction for $ 15.00 and then found out it had a machine in it. It sews the most beautiful seam, and I love using it. I think it's goin to be my favorite of the five.

You, are so right...It's the person who is using the mchine...and I had a 139.00 singer.it sewed perfect....But like i said, my son doesnt like a high sound pitch..it hurts his ears...so i gave it to my grandaughter...who loves it..I bought the bernina..and he doesnt even sqweel...but i thank god that i have what i have...and I just love to quilt...

I have several Berninas, but also have some very old Singers [before they started putting in plastic parts in them] and they both sew great! Not a machine snob but I do like both types of my machines.

I agree its the person operating the machine that has the talent and not the machine, most of the time.

I too have a Kenmore machine. It's about 30-40 years old and the only one I can afford now. It was my dear Mother-in-laws and she gave it to me about 20 years ago. And I love it even though it doesn't do a lot of stitches.

Amie - my daughter has a Kenmore that is about 25 years old. I like to sew when I'm visiting her, and have tried to buy a 1/4" foot for it. It is a high shank machine. Is that what you got? If so, where did you get it? I was able to get a walking foot for it, but have not had success getting a 1/4" foot.

I tried to get a 1/4 foot for my 25 year old kenmore also and they said they don't make them anymore. I was told to check Ebay.
I bought a new kenmore earlier this year and just bought a Jem Lite Janome off of Ebay. It is refurbished but works like a charm and I was able to get the quilting feet for it. This is the little one I will take if I travel somewhere or take a class. I really like both and neither one was too expensive. The Kenmore was around $350, but I did get $125 off of the original price because it was a return. It was never used. The woman who had it wanted the more expensive machine.
