I took a class on this at the local quilt store. My instructor had us do something different with the sashing. This was really easy and kept the corners aligned when you don't use cornerstones in the sashing. If your square is 15 1/2" then the sashing on the left of the block is 3 1/2" by 15 1/2". Sew it on the left side of the block. Then measure the top. It should measure 18 1/2". Cut your sashing 3 1/2" by 18 1/2" then sew on top. Do this to all the blocks. After you sew all the blocks together, measure the right side of the quilt top to figure your sashing, sew it on, then measure the bottom to figure your sashing length, then sew it on. All your corners line up! Pick a print that helps hide the seams.
Here's DH's quilt:
I used a very soft flannel for sashing, binding and backing. Warm and Natural for the batting. 15 1/2" blocks, three across, four down. It was almost too big for my machine when I quilted it! I did stitch in the ditch on all seams, then meandering on the blocks and loop-de-loop type on the sashing and borders.
These are fun quilts to make and they are good memory quilts. I plan on making my oldest one from his college t-shirts. My youngest doesn't part with his shirts until they are rags! Oh well, he got the minkee one.
