God Daughter's Quilt--Need Border Advice

Post by maryq » Sun Aug 26, 2007 9:07 am

HI Gals,

This afternoon I accomplished ONE of my goals---To finish putting the blocks together for my God Daughters Quilt. I DID IT!!!

It's 6 x 6 blocks across, cuz I goofed, when I meant to make it 5 x 7, but I like it this way and I'm not in the mood to rip it out! LOL

SO, my question is.... any EASY ideas to do for borders? I'm thinking since I kind of messed up, that I might make the borders at the top and bottom a little wider, but I'd like to do something different than just wide strips of the fabrics I've used. I have only a little of the green and purple left, but a fair amount of the floral print and the plain off white. Have NO idea what to do for backing yet either! Am thinking some QIAD 108" backing from the Magic Vine series.

I'm open to suggestions!! Remember EASY!!!

Thanks

It is sure lookin' pretty Maryq. Just my 2 cents on the borders would be a thin border in a darker value of that gorgeous blue in the quilt then maybe one with the floral. Or a narrow white border then HST of a dkr blue and the floral all the way around it.

Gals,

It's kind of hard to tell from the photo, but it's really a lavender/purple color. You think a dark purple? Or a deep green?

Either one would mean a trip to the quilt shop.. darn it.... Maybe I'll take it with me to the LQS and see what they think.

That is even better Maryq.....I tend to think of that beautiful color as a periwinkle? Anyway I love it and I think a much darker value of it in a narrow border. Good idea of taking it to the LQS and get their input. Be sure & show us what you decide. It is going to be a knockout quilt! As in drop dead gorgeous.

Maryq - I think you NEED to take this quilt top to the LQS so you can audition lots of fabrics for your border. Really.

I agree with Cathy32078's idea of a darker thin border then a floral and then the HST border.

I think El has a trick for making lots of HST really fast and easy. Check out her into on here.

Good Morning!

Well gals, I got the fabric yesterday for my borders!
Got a plain dark purple for the 1st narrow little border and cut 2" strips for it last nite. Also picked up some dark dark green, marbley like the plain lite green and here's my thoughts

First border of the dark purple about 1 1/2" wide , then I'm thinkinig cut 5" squares in 1/2 triangles and lay out in a pattern with the floral, lite lavendar and lite green, then a thin border of of the dark green. Haven't decided on the backing yet either, but I'm thinking my LA friend (that's you Quiltsbeme) can help me with that. It will be quite an accomplishment for me to just get the TOP done!!! Since I have to work this weekend, I won't get much sewing time in until Monday (we're closed for the holiday) But when I get the border started I'll take a picture and see what y'all think!

Thanks for your help!

Maryq
