I NEED HELP !

Post by QuiltinKay » Sun Aug 19, 2007 2:58 am

I am trying to plan two king size quilts using plaid. This is my problem, I can't decide what to use for background material. Someone in my guild suggested that I use muslin. Most of the time I use tone on tone but it doesn't look right with the plaids. Please give me your opinion. need your input.

I would think a nice Muslin or a solid white or cream. Probaby a cream. That is just my thoughts though. Hopefully others will pop in and give you some suggestions. Are you doing okay?

I would agree with Cathy32078 that a white or cream would be nice. I love plaid.

HI, What is the predominate color in your plaid. You could go with a pale color of that, either cream, beige, blue, gray or whatever. Tone on tone sounds good. I never use muslin in my quilts. Marge

I started using Kona fabric after hearing Eleanor talk about it in Egg Money Quilts. It's nicer than muslin. I've found it at Hancocks and Hobby Lobby (Hobby Lobby is cheaper). At the Hancocks here it's $6.00 a yard and at Hobby Lobby, it's $4.00 a yard.

QuiltinKay - how much of a contrast do you need for your particular pattern? And what color plaids? If you are using vivid reds, blues, greens, for example, you can use a lighter cream or beige. If the colors of the plaids are more muted dark blue, browns, burgundy and greens then I would suggest using a med. tan or gray tone on tone. I don't normally use muslin in my quilt tops. Or you could use a solid color like navy blue or dark brown. It depends on how much contrast you need.

I am using a combination of reds, blues, greens, browns, and maroons along with a few lighter plaids. I have been collecting plaids and homespuns for years and now need to use them for these two quilts which are for the sons of one of my friends. I am getting some good ideas from your comments. I knew I could count on you girls to help the old one with her problem.

I agree with the light color in your plaid. I just made the bear quilt and it had a lot of different plaids it it. The black bear looked great because there was a lot of black in the plaids I used. I am going to make another quilt with plaids and they are a tan color with different colors of pinks. I plan to make the moose on the quilt with a brown color. I hope this helps. Can you download us a picture? My bear was all plaids and stripe plaids.

Kay, I am sure you will choose something wonderful. I really love plaids but haven't got very many of them. What pattern are you doing? A Tan would probably go well with your colors unless there is a lot of Tan in the plaids. Or a lt. creamy yellow? Let us know what you decide on.
