Quilter78, I prefer to not wash because I like the crinkled look after the quilt is completed and then washed. However, if I have reds, blues. greens, & dark colors, I will test them for bleeding. If they bleed, I pretreat with Retayne. Some use Vinegar to set the color. 100% cotton will shrink some, maybe just a bit regardless of the cost. IMHO

I cut the fabric; then chain stitch. It seems to go faster.

How much vinegar do you use say in a half washer load?

I LIKE TO CUT PIECES AND LABEL AND PUT INTO ZIPLOCK BAGS. BUT SOMETIMES I GET ANXIOUS AND GOAHEAD AND MAKE A BLOCK OR TWO, THREE.... LOL
