unsewing squares already in top

i am trying to help my sweet daughterinlaw she is making a trip around world quilt top is going to be a wall hanging when she first started the top the lady who showed her did not tell her to do 1/4 in seams so they are just barely caught in some squares so she has decided to take out the second row and replace the fabric as she has decided its not cotton material i know very little about hand piecing so its like the blind leading the blind so i am afraid she will have trouble getting the four 3 inch squares to fit back in since the seams were not correct now she knows what she did wrong but i can not help her much on getting her to get them replaced now that she almost has the top finished so can anyone help me so i can maybe help her dont wont her to get discourage since this is her first and other than that small problem her top looks great ollie1shoe

It sounds like if she takes out the second row it might snowball and become a bigger project then intended. Can the second row be salvaged?

she thinks this row is not 100% cotton and since her seams were not deep enough they are fraying out she wanted to replace this row with cotton fabric and do the correct 1/4 inch seam allowance since i have only machine pieced i dont know how much help i can be to her what do i need to watch out for ? im afraid since her seams are narrow the square will not fit unless she makes it a dab larger to allow for the correct seam are i may be completly wrong help ollie1shoe

I'm not a hand piecer but I think you would attack it just like you would do a machine pieced project if they weren't big enough.

I do quite a bit of restoration work and frequently have to take out a square, a block or part of a row due to deteriation of the fabric -more often than not it is a piece that was hand pieces and doesnt have the 1/4 seam allowance - one of the most important things to remember in that case is when taking out the old be very diligent to be complete and keep it clean - I put it all back together on the machine - if there is any question about it I will use a basting stitch first - turn it over make sure it is correct and then resew with regular stitch -

most important thing to remember - do it one step at a time and don't get overwhelmed

thanks for all the imput if anyone else has something to add please do also has anyone used the fraying glue that keeps things from raveling out more wonder if that might help on the sems that are just barely caught ollie1shoe
