my 2 cents

Post by sukiyhtaky » Wed Jun 13, 2007 11:46 pm

Just had to stick my two cents in on piles of fabrics all over. I like everyone live by the 'if 2 yards are what I need, I better get 4 just in case and in all colors REALLY just in case'. I find great solace in just looking at my stashes sometimes. I have had to be at home for a few years now due to an injury and most days I'm fine but there are days when pain totally overwhelms me and all I can do is sit. At times like this I like to just sit and refold my fabrics and look at them and dream. It helps to get through the down times as I am sure many out there know. It really annoys my daughter, especially now that she is ready to leave for college in the fall and I have already started boxing up her walk in closet so I can reconvert her room to my sewing room and have shelves all over, a tv, easy chair for hand sewing and new machines. It will take me awhile to get all of that but it makes the planning all the sweeter. I salute all of my fellow 'holics with a nice icy cold Coke of course! :)

Sukiyhtaky, hello & welcome to the QIAD family. Happy to have you. So glad you are one of "us" fabricaholics. There is just the greatest comfort in being able to even just go in and look at our stash. I was in the same situation as you when my youngest DD left was preparing to leave home. I was sad. But when that sdaness took over, I just refocused on moving from the dining room to her room for sewing. She too was annoyed and was for 2-3 yrs. Every time she came home she went to her old room and just stared. She ahs now accepted it and is very happy for me. She was here yesterday & we spent 3 hrs. in there visiting and talking about fabric & quilts. She is clueless but was showing an interest. So I can so relate with you. I am sorry you have painful days. What kinds of quilts have you done or want to do? What is your fav. colors? So good to have you!

I had to laugh at some of the comments. My baby is about to "fly the coop" and part of me is sad, but part of me says...hurry up and move out already...as I want her room for my Quilting studio. I sneak in her room and measure so I will know where things will go when she leaves.
Glad your stash brings you comfort Sukiyhtaky. It is doing what it is supposed to do. Welcome to the forum.

Welsome Suki. You are at the best forum in cyberspace! Please tell us what quilts you have done or want to do. Sorry about your pain - just sent up a prayer for you. When my oldest daughter moved out I made her room my sewing room. She was perturbed but tuff tarts. LOL

I didn't wait for the first kid to leave, when I started to quilt, I took over the den. DH had his shop/garage workroom, I wanted a room of my own that was not the bedroom or kitchen or dining room. I moved all the furniture out and took over. The kids had to learn to sit in the living room and not have a 'toss it in the den until later' room. When the oldest child went to college, the family got the den back. I also put the computer in my sewing room. I still have a 13 yr. old at home so computer privacy for her is not happening.

when I went off to college my mom moved all my stuff - when I came home she had moved me to the basement - we were living in apartments at the time and each apartment was asigned maids quarters - everyone used theirs for storage except for a few of us who's moms had taken over our rooms and moved us to the basement - worst part was no bathroom down there

sukiy, I know what you mean about pain. I injured myself at work in 97 and had to retire due to chronic pain. Now looking back, I am glad I can be home and do things as I want. I know it gets to you that you can't sew all the time, but try doing a little at a time. Maybe 15 to 20 min and then come back to quilting in an couple of hours. I have learned, it is small steps that gets stuff done. I think it is great you are setting up a sewing room just for you. This way you can do what you want, walk out and take a break and come back to it. Hope you feel better and if you need to talk, email me. Geri

Sorry to hear about the pain. I have a bad hip, sometimes it is fine, but most days lately it is my enemy.

My son said I was painting his room before he had to stop for the first stop sign (I live on the corner with the sign). He was almost right. I turned his room in the the computer room. I had established the sewing room years ago.

I often wonder where I had ever put those boys. Both of their old rooms are in use and the closets are full.

I hope you have many good days in a row.

I found if I fold my fabric on my long ruler it really makes a difference in the space it takes to store it. A wider ruler makes shorter wide stacks and a thinner ruler makes taller narrow stacks. I can get double the amount of fabric in a bin or on a shelf folding it on the ruler. I wowed the ladies at Hancocks folding my fabric of the 90% sale after the clerk cut it. My pile took up less then 1/2 of the cart, the other ladies had their cart piled high and had less fabric. My one carry out sack was way less bulky then their two sacks.
