I have a question regarding meandering or stippling. Is this something that is new to quilting with the invention of long arm machines or was this ever done on antique quilts by hand?? Just curious. I am hand quilting and wondering if I should even attempt this. Thanks for your advice!

I saw Joe Cunningham (Joe the Quilter) do hand stippling on Simply Quilts once. It looked pretty easy and wasn't stitched as closely as machine stippling.

I've only done it on a machine. I don't see why you couldn't do it by hand.

That's what I do on my sewing machine with the feed dogs down and the darning foot on....

A lady at my LQS told me that the difference between meandering and stippling is that stippling is closer together than meandering - more like 1/4-1/2 inch. I did DH's lap quilt with both - it was a star pattern and did the stippling on the stars and meandering on the background.

I did it on my DH's Trip around the World quilt, by Hand & I did it like maybe 1/4 to 1/2" apart so it is heavily quilted. I enjoyed it.

I just did meandering on a child's quilt. I got the advice from the message boards here. But, I had seen a episode of Simply Quilts and she suggested leaving the feed dog up. So, with being advised to do it with them up and down I tried both. Right now, I liked it with them up. Maybe when I get a little bit more experienced I try it again with them down. The best thing is to practice.
