Just thought I would start a new topic ! What are your thoughts on preparing fabric. Do you pre wash your fabric or not?

If the quilt is going to be used I wash the fabric. If it's just a wall hanging, I don't.

There's a topic on this on the "Fabric Discussions" category - I bumped it to the top for you. Maybe you can get some ideas there.

I rarely wash. I like the crispness of new fabric. Plus I like the little texture you sometimes get when you wash a quilt after it's been quilted, makes it look sort of vintage even if's it's not retro fabric.

I always wash too. That way I know "all" my stuff is washed and ready to cut. Then I don't have to wait for a load of laundry before I can sit down and quilt. :)

My fabrics get a vinegar bath to set the colors, then wash (no fabric softener) and dry (no fabric sheet). Before I cut I spray starch and iron the fabric to put some body into it. No fabric makes it back to my sewing studio until it's washed. The only time I have not pre-washed my fabric was when I made a rag quilt and the directions stated not to wash the fabric.

I usually don't wash my fabric first and it has only came back to bite me once. My fabric faded some but I used dye magnets and it did'nt effect the other fabrics. Since it is one I use for me personally it was'nt so bad. I have bought some black that I am going to wash first because I don't want it to fade. If it does do you think I could redye it because I want a black, black for this quilt?

I always was fabric too.. Guess it's an old habit from when I was more into sewing clothes. I wash, iron and have been sprtzing with starch a little depending on the fabric. Found a nice spray starch that has a scent of lavendar so it smells a little better. I find if I'm sewing triangles, it's a little easier to sew them if they've been starched first.

That's my 2 cents
