SUPPER CLUB - Saturday, Aug 8th
Good morning,
The mornings are sure darker than they used to be 2 months ago. And the birds are not so noisy. I hope they haven't started leaving yet!
Yesterday I picked blackberries on my walk - enough for one batch of jam. Got home, made the jam (and a peach cobbler using my old Betty Crocker cookbook!), and cleaned my very messy kitchen, washing all the pans & utensils. Then I thought - "I wonder if there are any berries on our own property?" So I went looking and ended up with TWO buckets full! So back to the kitchen I went and made two more batches. In all I got 31 half-pints. And had to clean up the mess all over again! Now any berries I pick will be going into the freezer. Or I could make up pie filling and can it like my mom used to do . . .
Today's plan is to finish packing the trailer. Not too much to put in for only 3 days - and most of the food is already in there. So this should be an easy peasy day. The only project I have going is to finish a few more masks with an American flag theme and hopefully put binding on Dizzy Daizy - IF Bill gets it done. He got distracted yesterday and ended up washing/waxing the pick-up.
CAROL - I think I have a BC Cookie book, too. Actually I have a 6-ft shelf filled with cookbooks but BC is always my go-to. If I have a cooking problem, looking for a recipe, etc., Bill always says, "Did you check with Betty?"
IRISH - what a surprise to find on your porch! Something those wily porch pirates probably wouldn't swipe! Too much work! I hope you wanted a queen bed for your guest room! lol! Terry was so smart! I love that he took his recipes! lol! Hope your and Ruby's drive to the airport was uneventful except for the collecting of Kathy!
JANA - we will be staying in the park at Grant Village campground. We have stayed in the park several times in different campgrounds. Yellowstone is one of my favorite places on earth. We've camped our way through the Tetons, too, and I have a cross-stitch picture I did of the Tetons and it hangs in our family room next to a nearly identical framed photograph I took. We came down Teton Pass once, eastbound, in our old pick-up, sans brakes, while towing our trailer. It was one scary ride! The next big city we came to we stopped at Cummins and had an engine brake installed. Our last trip, Bill was sitting under the overhang of our fifth-wheel in our campsite, reading a book. And a buffalo came under there and joined him! Meanwhile, another was scratching himself on our front steps. I was inside and the door was open. They do get up close and personal! Neither of us moved an inch!
BECCA - the news showed a lot of homes nearer the coast destroyed more by tornadoes than the storm. So sad for those folks! While born in Michigan, Bill grew up about 30 miles from our coast. It's cooler and wetter there but it is REALLY rare for our side of the country to have storms like the east has. People still talk about our "Columbus Day Storm" of 1962. I was 11. Now they would call that a Cat 1 hurricane, but it was a "100-year storm". What's on your docket for the day?
I think tonite we'll be grilling pork chops with fried apples, corn on the cob, and a salad. How's your supper looking?
What's cookin' at your house?

Re: SUPPER CLUB - Saturday, Aug 8th
Good morning!
My BC cookbook is the 1950 one, or just a bit earlier. It is older than I am. Sarah found a reprint of it, so I have a brand new one as well. I have many cookbooks, all with a favorite recipe or two in them. And then a whole recipe file of hand written cards, either written, or glued cutout recipes. Oh, then I have a huge file on my computer of recipes I have gathered. The boys call, wanting to know how to make something, so I can email them or look it up. Sarah already has most of them. In fact, the other day, Sandee and Sarah were playing with getting my mom's custard right. It is a food Sarah can eat right now with her tooth problem. She cooked the custard in her water bath canner in small jars, worked beautifully! They are not preserved, just cooked in the canner.
Dinner - we ended up with a very yummy meatloaf last night, so there are reruns. It is summer - rerun season on the TV, so why not in my kitchen! LOL!
Mary - so you know that road! The view looking into Jackson Hole is spectacular! Now on the Driggs side, is a ski resort, Grand Targhee, well, that is where my skiing escapades started and finished. I came down a run, I shouldn't have been on, fell, and torn up my knees. Ski patrol had to bring me down off the mountain in their rescue toboggan. I was at college, so to get home from Idaho to California, at the end of the semester, my mom flew me home. I was in a cast from my toes to my hip. I had a stop over from Idaho Falls, to Salt Lake, then on to San Francisco. I stayed on the plane, but many got off and boarded another plane to Los Angeles. That plane was hijacked to Cuba that afternoon - I came that close to being hijacked! For all I know the hijacker was first on my part of the flight! See, I told y'all I had lots of stories.
This was all in 1972.
Well, time to finish up putting away groceries. Did the cols things last night, now the rest.
Stay Safe!
Hugs,
Jana

Re: SUPPER CLUB - Saturday, Aug 8th
Today I went to the Farmer's market. The fruit I have been buying at the grocery store has been tasteless. I intended to buy corn on the cob, but forgot. I did buy lemons, strawberries, peaches and plums as well as green pepper and tomatoes. Of course that is too much fruit!
I have been wanting to try making Strawberry Freezer Jam. I had already purchased the pectin and had lots of jars. (I seem to only have wide mouth jar lids though so need to find regular size.) I did make it and hope it turns out okay. I am not sure I chopped up the strawberries enough, but how bad can it be? We can always put it on ice cream. lol
We have an orange tree and the oranges are falling down because they are ripe and they are making room for the new crop. That is what happens. I picked four huge oranges and grated the rind and juiced them. Then I strained the juice and put it in ice cube trays, now I can use it in recipes like the one I made the other day for pork chops. I will do the same thing to the lemons. We have a lemon tree, but they are not ripe.
Maryz - When I picked boysenberries this spring I made cobbler filling and froze it. I still have a lot of berries in the freezer from last year. I should make some jam. For a while I had trouble finding sugar in the stores. I think it was just when I was shopping. Maybe I will see about it. I am really thinking I need to can tomato sauce! The stores still do not have crushed tomatoes, which I use a lot.
If I had written earlier I would have said Chicken, but that did not happen. We had some sauce leftovers so I added cooked ground turkey and made spaghetti. It was delicious.

Hi everyone!
We had pork tenderloin for supper. Been a little busy, sorry.
I hope you all are doing good.
Tomorrow is going to be a busy day too.
Dad's been not feeling good, he goes for more tests tomorrow and they'll see if they're gonna put him in the hospital.
Sorry so short.
Tina
