SUPPER CLUB - Friday, July 24

Post by purrfect-lady » Fri Jul 24, 2020 6:25 am

Good morning!

For a week when we had no real plans, we've sure been busy! I started on a cleaning binge (accidentally, not on purpose!) and instead of doing the downstairs yesterday, we got involved in the garage. I spent most of my time in one big cabinet cleaning/purging all my overflow big kitchen items, some sentimental things, all my canning supplies, and more. Five boxes are going to Goodwill, and I filled one bag with trash. Feels so good to get rid of STUFF. I think today we'll finish the garage and maybe then will move our efforts back into the house. Tomorrow we'll be cleaning our shop. UGH. But I did manage to save out an hour or so for sewing! Hopefully, today, too, will have a little bit of sewing. I'm working on my QOV project this week.

JANA - I think you would like hardwood floors in your great room area. We were going to do it when we recarpeted our upper floor 6 yrs ago. But the cost of the flooring we picked out was twice the cost of good carpet! So we went with the rugs. But last August, when we did our downstairs, we put down engineered hardwood - had it laid on 45* diagonal for interest - and topped it with area rugs to soften it. I wanted carpet but decided to let Bill have his way with wood floors and turns out I love it! The bedroom, though, is carpet with the softest pad I've ever felt under my feet.

BECCA - my wildflower book lives in the trailer because usually, when I want to look up flowers we're out in the trailer. I've never heard of blackberry lilies either and now I need to go look them up, though we do have a few tiger lillies here and wild columbine, too. As for pickles, there isn't a pickle I don't love!

TINA - good on Frankie cleaning his garage! I always take a hand in ours because it's attached to the house and when the garage gets dirty, it's all tracked inside and then I have even more mess to deal with. And Bill won't clean the garage unless I say, "Honey, the garage could use a good sweeping." and "Look at this mess coming in from the garage, Dear." and finally, "BILL, CLEAN THE FRIGGIN' GARAGE!!!" Even then, his idea of 'cleaning' is to shove everything to the perimeters and use the leaf blower on the floor. The man needs close supervision! As to your chicken, are you cooking it in your oven? How old is your oven? Have you checked the temp? Maybe an element is going out.

IRISH - I love looking at yards, too. Most of my daily walks take me through some of the nearby housing developments whose HOA's employ gardeners, just to see other people's flowers. But I can resist buying plants for myself because I know the only gardener on my property is ME. We are REALLY busy when we know my sis and bil are coming to visit because she is a garden freak, he eyeballs the garage and shop, and they BOTH are neatniks inside the house! It's a lot of work having them as guests but we get everything done at one time and then we can coast for a while!

Supper? Hmmm.... I'll have to think on that one. It's a good day to cook inside because we're only going to be 64* out. Maybe red beans and rice. I might slice up some turkey kielbasa to add to it. Plus a salad and watermelon. I think I'll put the beans in the crockpot to cook through the day.

Got any ideas for your plate tonite?

Good morning!
Mary, I laugh....I remember when my aunt and uncle would come for visits and Mom and Dad would do deep cleaning, remodel bathroom, always brand new towels and wash clothes, clean yards etc because Mom and Dad said that her sister and BIL were neat freaks and always had new things..... come to find out from my cousin (their son) they did they same thing when we went for visits šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚
Your high is 4 degrees lower than our low! We only got to 90 yesterday but it was a hot humid 90, we're just complainers šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£
I don't usually go in the garage unless it's cool temps and then I'm usually there just to watch Frankie make something, his garage is his and my sewing room is mine.... although every once in a while he'll tell me I need to do this or that in my sewing room and I tell him after he cleans his garage then he can complain about my sewing room. He's cleaning up around his garage and around the outside of the fence where he likes to "set things till later" at least it's getting gone now. He had an old dryer sitting there for almost 2 years, even used it for target practice teaching Jazmyne how to shoot, it's gone, yay!! He's tearing down on old shed that's falling apart and just cleaning up. Here places like that are a neon flashing open sign for rattlesnakes.
I'm doing laundry and trying to clean. Somehow I hurt my right shoulder and upper back on my right and I've been having major pain and a stiff neck. I keep doing things but it's really slowing me down and I'm not getting as much as I want to get done.
Jana, I read about your chicken, did you say where our post the recipe? I'm always looking for good chicken recipes.
Oh Mary, my stove/ oven is at least 20 years old, I've recalibrated the temperature and check it often now, no heating elements because it's gas. I thought I was crowding the chickens in too small of a roaster but this time I could've put 2 big whole chickens in this one with all the veggies so it had all kinds of room around it. I used to bake whole chickens years ago with no problem, i have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I do need a new stove/ oven.... hopefully next year šŸ¤ž
I laid pork chops out for supper, I'll do potatoes and peas with.

Mary, there always seems like there is something to clean. I had my task list finished by 2 yesterday. So I quilted up a small top I made earlier this month. It came out really cute. I need to find some binding for it.

Tina, my stove is 23 and still going. Fingers crossed. It's gas also.

Tonight for dinner will be chicken or blt's w/avocado. We''ll also be having the yummy spinach salad tonight.

I think our high today will be low 80's.

Have a lovely day.

Good morning!

Tina - I used Pioneer Woman's fried chicken recipe. Have you ever tried spatchcocking a chicken to roast? You cut down each side of the backbone, remove it, then open the chicken up flat. I have cooked whole chickens that way, even putting the potatoes sliced, underneath to catch the drippings, making them yummy. Gas ovens do need to be checked for heat/temp as well.

Mary - I go out and watch Michael clean up the garage workshop. I just make suggestions where something could go. It stays fairly clean. There needs to be room for the Highlander. Going to get in the car in the snow is a big no no! When he leaves his "stuff" in the house, in the way, I have a landing zone, just next to the garage door where I put it.

Well, dinner - new food needs to appear - what yet needs to be determined. I am in the midst of cleaning up my kitchen. I took my fryer apart, got rid of the old chicken oil and scraped out the sludge from the bottom, yuck! Still getting that mess done!

My fruit fabric arrived. I have a ton! It could only be ordered in yard increments, and I just couldn't have the same fruit for all my new potholders, so I bought 5 different fabrics. You only need about a 6 or 7 inch circle for each, so, guess what my girls are getting for Christmas? LOL! Sarah and I found jumbo rick rack for the fluted edge and I have enough for 8 or so right now. We bought all that Hobby Lobby had yesterday. So I am heading down to make a few pies this morning in the Batt Cave.

Stay Safe!
Hugs,
Jana

Good early afternoon! Somehow I didn’t finish here, although I did sit down at my computer and read the posts.

We are hot and humid again… er… make that STILL hot and humid. Last evening at 7:30, I walked out to look for Covid to bring him home. It was 90 degrees with a heat index of 96. I walked all over 2 pastures before I finally found him with several of his pals. As we made our way home, he gave me a swift, hard butt in my behind, and to keep from falling I somehow wrenched my knee. It’s still sore this morning. I sat outside for a bit this morning and watched the calves. A bunch of the calves came through the fence and were ā€œmowingā€ the yard with Covid. Pinkie found Covid’s sweet feed and decided he really liked it and licked the feed pan clean. It was in the mid-80s when I was out there before DH got back from coffee. I was under the big ash tree, so it was better than in the sun.

Becca—are the blackberry lilies anything like the tiger lilies? Blackberry lilies are named after their seed pods that look like blackberries… and they really do!

Irish—That’s really planning ahead for the cookies! Inquiring minds want to know: what kind of cookies will you be making? We don’t have cookie tables here. It sounds WONDERFUL!!! I would probably make decorated sugar cookies.

Mary—you really did a purge! I should do some, but it’s hard. I must have latent or not so latent hoarder genes. I just close my eyes when I have to go through the garage/shop.

Tina—I used to have to go clean Mom’s house when my sister was going to visit her. You have a bum shoulder, and I have a bum knee. Getting old is not for sissies, and you are my DD’s age!

Lori—I hear you with always something to clean. Aack!!! Good for you getting chores completed and a top quilted!!!

Jana—I made ā€œfruit piesā€ potholders one year for Christmas. They came out real cute with lattice tops. Love the ric-rack fluted crust!

Lori—My aunt used to live in Fullerton. She is in Murrietta now. I talked to her yesterday afternoon. She was telling me how pleasant their weather is. My cypress vine with the little red flowers died out. I was so disappointed. The hummingbirds loved it! I had an old wooden ladder propped up against my clothesline pole for the vine to climb.

Carol-Q7—Are you by any chance in the Glendale guild? I saw they had a zoom meeting and workshop on ā€œHip to be squareā€ and now I want to sew up a layer cake in that pattern.

Dinner here will be chicken and rice rerun with salads and maybe some fruit. I’ll be playing in my sewing room. It’s just too warm to be outside until evening when I fetch Covid. He and his pals left for the pastures about ten, so I’ll be hunting him later.

Bon appƩtit!

Hi Chickie - No, I am not in the Glendale Guild. I am in the South Bay Quilters Guild. We had a couple of our Guild members give presentations via Zoom this past Tuesday. It was very effective. Probably better than it was if it had been done in person because you could see closer. The Southern California Council of Quilt Guilds (SCCQG.org) has some really good tips on joining a Zoom meeting. The Zoom website also has a video.

Tonight's dinner was going to be banished food, but it may get pushed to tomorrow and we will have pizza. I will ask DH.

I have spent today outside mostly. I took the car to the carwash and got gas too. It was very nice weather today.
