Picking a steam iron?

Post by sunny_reg » Thu May 14, 2020 8:35 pm

I hope that's OK to post something like this here, in the Chit Chat section.
Unfortunately, my faithful steam iron - no-name which served me well for almost thirteen years - died, so now I'm looking for a replacement. I plan to use it for sewing mostly, but it should be able to do the usual work of pressing clothes as well. Unfortunately I know nothing about newer irons, so I'd like to ask which ones do you use? What I should look for?
Guess I'd like to keep a steam option and choose something durable.

a small update: ended up ordering Hamilton Beach from this list: https://wisepick.org/best-steam-iron/ - tried B&D first as I was recommended, but it's just too heavy for my arms I guess. Waiting for a HB to arrive, would post smth later if somebody needs my review.

Steam irons - any one will do. You could spend a bunch of money and get a Oliso iron. My favorite. Or just a cheapy iron, as no matter what you do, they all break and need to be replaced, sooner than we like. Some never put water in. I have such hard water that I use a mix of distilled and bottled water, to get as much life out of mine as possible. I like to use steam on my blocks.

I, too, love using steam for most things. I have had two Rowentas and both leaked and both died. One of them only lasted 6 months. Now I buy whatever brand is on sale at the moment. Most usually last 3 or 4 years and I think they are all pretty much the same. I HAVE to have the automatic turn off feature on mine since I found I left an iron on for 4 days once. Good luck!
