I always try to go with 9 patch or disappearing 9 patch. And, my granddaughter loved sewing 5" square charm pieces together for her first quilt. Best wishes to you!
A 9-patch is sewing 9 equal patches together in rows of 3. A disappearing 9-patch takes the first 9 patch and cuts it down the middle vertically and horizontally to make 4 patches of 4 different blocks. Arrange them to you liking twisting and turning them.

I agree, a 9 patch is very simple. So is El's crayon quilt pattern. It is stripped pieced and no matching up blocks.
