SUPPER CLUB Saturday, May 5

Good morning and happy Cinco de Mayo! Do you know what the Mexicans are celebrating today? Their victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla May 5, 1862. I had to look that up. I knew it wasn't their Independence Day (which is Sept 16th), and this year I at least remembered it was a victory of some sort! And why do Americans celebrate this date so vigorously? I imagine because it's a great excuse to drink beer! lol!
This morning we're going to the local cemetery, a mile down the road, for the annual clean-up day so it all looks spiffy for Mother's Day and memorial Day. There is no perpetual grounds care for these little community cemeteries so Families of the 'residents' do this every year and I've missed the last few years. But we'll need to scurry home, clean up, and get ready for tonite.
IRISH - I think your kitty needs extra attention if she had to go to the vet. Our Riley no longer gets shots. Our vet says in very old cats the shots side effects are more harmful than not getting the shots. But when our 'kids' get them, they, too, lay around the next day and need a little spoiling. I think your idea of pillowcases with that extra fabric is great! GO PENGUINS!!
JANA - Is Stu home for the summer already?? Does he have 2 yrs of college behind him now? Time goes so quickly. What's next after Sunflowers? Alec's jacket will say "Chef Alec" on it. Tina has been gracious enough to agree to make me labels to applique to the jacket and apron I also plan to make. They will be white but I got some orange bias tape to add a bit of trim because he LOVES orange and he loves making a bit of a statement. Years ago i made him a chef's jacket and hat but all in orange. He loved it! But now he has to be a professional, so white it is with just a touch of orange. Though come to think of it, I often see (on TV) chefs dressed in black, too. Black and orange would be a great combo, too, and he'd be all ready for Halloween cooking, which he loves!
BECCA - your mom sounds like she and my mom would have been great friends! If they could have found the time to visit! I am so sorry that your mom lost children though. That would be the hardest hill of all to climb.
PAM - thank you for the sweet comments on my "mom commentary". I felt I got carried away but let it stand. After all, it's Mom Season! Sounds like you and your mom have a wonderful relationship! Such a blessing! And I'm with your hubby! Raw meat kind of gives me the gags, too. I cook and eat it, but it's just not my thing. And in nursing school, after 'body lab', I couldn't eat meat of any kind for 2 whole years!
Tonite we have two couples coming to celebrate C-d-M. Bill is making steak fajitas and I'm doing "capirotada", a Mexican bread pudding with apples and cheese in it. I've never made it before, but it's in my Mexican Cookbook under 'desserts' and I have all the ingredients. Our guests are bringing appetizers, taco salad, and Mexican beer. (I told you! Ole'!!). And I think I'll also heat up some refried beans, too. I love them. And we might have a campfire after supper. It should be a good evening for it if the weather holds.
What's the story at your house for tonite?
