Psalm 133

A great deal of discussion is focused on criticism of differences among Christians and various denominations as if unity should be the supreme objective. Jesus Himself did speak of His desire for unity in John 17 and that His followers would be "one." However, the unity of which He spoke was based on truly knowing the Father, being sanctified in His truth, and being perfected in a love that glorifies Him. Those who present unity as the greatest good usually advocate it at any cost, even a willingness to compromise truth. The shallow ecumenical unity of seeking to unity various streams of faith is accomplished only by each one having to give up certain unique convictions; God is not glorified when the teachings of His Word are relinquished for the sake of getting along with others. True unity comes from a common sanctification of God's Spirit in response to faithfully holding to His teachings and His Word.

There is one thing that unifies, no matter how different our understandings may be, is that we have have faith in Jesus Christ.
