Psalm 110

Jesus quotes the opening verse of this Psalm in His confrontation with the scribes and Pharisees in Luke 20:41-43. It is a prophetic reference to the Christ who would come and conquer sin and death, bringing them into subjection as a footstool under His feet. As a descendent of David, He should be under subjection to David's authority, yet David acknowledged Him as Lord. God is the Lord; He is all powerful. David was His servant. but as His anointed, David was given a place of authority at His right hand until God, through Jesus Christ--the seed of David--established His rule over all.

Melchizedek was an ancient mystical priest who appeared to Abraham as a personification of God [Gen 14:18] and is referred to in Zechariah and Hebrews as an illustration of the eternal existence of God. He represents God's unchanging purpose in establishing His covenant with His servants--redeeming His people and judging the nations.
