SUPPER CLUB - Wed, Nov 22nd

Post by purrfect-lady » Wed Nov 22, 2017 2:47 am

Good morning!

November 22nd. I think most everyone here remembers that day in history, except maybe for our kid, Tina. I was in 7th grade and in class when the principal's voice came over the intercom telling us that President Kennedy had been shot. We all put down pencils, said prayers, and then listened to a radio broadcast over the intercom. Sad day. Hard to believe that was 54 years ago.

But now, on to happier things! Thanksgiving!! Who's ready? Our menu will be ham, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes/gravy, green bean casserole, rolls, cranberry sauce/pickles/olives, rolls, and pumpkin pie. We'll only be 6 total and the others will be bringing some of the food. So it won't be too big a job in the kitchen. Today I'll do some cleaning, expand and set the table with plates upside down. Cats, you know. And make my cranberry sauce and pull out all my serving dishes, and whatever else I can think of to do ahead of time. If there's time, I'll hang out in my sewing room for a bit, too. Getting some UFO's finished, past swap & lotto blocks together, and plan to donate them for Christmas to the nursing home where my dad was for the last 6 months off his life. I've even gotten the hang of posting photos so I have up my latest project - the jar swap blocks - if you want to see it.

IRISH - I hope both your teeth and your car are OK. I bet Jim will enjoy going to Kevin's and I hope it's a good day for you both! Sadly, I CAN imagine what that young policeman's family is going through and my heart breaks for them. I'm so glad they caught the shooter.

BECCA - We've never done two main dishes for our holiday dinners. you get turkey or you get ham. Usually, whichever one we don't have for TG shows up at Christmas. And it's never beef. I'm not sure why, it just never is.

JANA - Did you enjoy your ride on your new roads yesterday? I guess I'm woefully ignorant of some foody things, but aren't masa and polenta both made from cornmeal? I like it all!

CHICKIE - I was going to make a blackberry pie or cobbler, too, and I still might. With only 6 people, two desserts seems excessive, but it's THANKSGIVING!! That's good news about your DD's friend. Saying a prayer for her that she is another miracle.

TINA - there can't be too much in the motorhome to steal, so it's good to let your sister watch your mom and you can do your thing at home. You're so busy! Who all is coming to your house for dinner this year?

LINDA - I think you are off on your trip. Sounds like a fun thing to do and I hope you have an awesome, relaxing, fun time! and you get to come home to a gleaming kitchen!!

We have leftovers from the Italian restaurant last night. So we're good on supper here. I'll just toss a salad. Funny, but we were at the same place about a month ago and ordered the same thing. And it was so much better that time. It really makes a difference who is cooking. Also, if food doesn't sit under warming lamps while you eat your salad. But the wine was excellent and half-price so it was all good! lol!

what's good at your house tonite?

Good morning :)
Sorry your supper wasn't as good this time Mary, what did you order? Your Thanksgiving dinner sounds yummy! Mom,Dad, Jamie (my little brother), Holly, Adam, Jazmyne, Easton, Preston, Kevin, Maria, Matthew, Frankie and me will be here for Thanksgiving :) Mary, you're right, I never made a mental note when I got older of the day Kennedy was shot, how weird because I grew up with it always being talked about. I will be 53 next month so it was before me but it's always been a big part of conversations and watching my whole life. Frankie and I just watched a thing the other night about it too.
I finished quilting a quilt last night at 11:30 my nights keep getting later and my mornings earlier....I can see a late night tonight. But I'm getting so much done! I'll be vacuuming and dusting this morning and baking and cooking my green beans and mashed potatoes and making Waldorf and Watergate salads tonight oh and doing the cinnamon rolls so I can pop them in the oven before the turkey in the morning.
Frankie has 19 work days left until he retires, he's getting nervous.
I have red enchilada sauce in the fridge, tamales so those will be on my plate tonight :)

Oh, let me try this again.

Good morning!

While I was typing my post this morning, QIAD wanted me to sign in again and would not let me post, so when I signed in, I lost the original.

Mary - yes, masa and polenta are made from cornmeal. But to my tastes, masa is drier and denser than polenta. When we made tamales, the polenta was cooked in homemade stock and had great flavor.

Tina - 19 days! Hope you are the one ready for changes - it is different having them around all the time.

Dinner tomorrow will be 16 of us. Funny how just two started out some 43 years ago and now have all these kids! Oh, forgot, that I have three more in California and one more baby due in March - that makes 20!

Yesterday, the tunnel wasn't opened yet, it is now and we need a run over to Costco, right near there. Ethan is here and loves adventures, so he will get to see and go through his first tunnel. Not much of a tunnel, but a tunnel anyway!

I did a number on my good pan last night steaming our tamales. Burnt it dry and then some. The wrappers on the tamales were just about to burst into flames when I checked on them. The pan is totally discolored. So I guess I will need a new set of pans. I was needing a couple pans more anyway. I have a saucepan that I gave my mom 45 years ago and it is still great, so may look at finding a set of that - Faberware, then again, a Cuisnart set might be nice.

Well, time yo head over to the zoo, Costco,
Enjoy,
Jana

I’m late today. Yes, this is an infamous day. I was in junior college.

I’m late today—busy! I fed the calves and dogs, then I hit the kitchen and cut up my noodles to be ready for cooking tomorrow. Next I made cranberry sauce, and I got my blackberry pies made—one to take, and one and a half for here (only top crust). The other one for here is quite small. I also cleaned up the mess. It seemed like I did more, but that’s all I can remember. After brunch, the hooligans and I walked down to Ava’s. We are cool—low 30s, but sunny and calm. I can handle that, but I can’t stand 20 degrees warmer, overcast and windy. I know, I’m nuts!

Mary—for only being six, you are busy!!! The jar quilt is neat and will be loved. I know DD’s friend and her family are celebrating a very special Thanksgiving.

I’d go for leftover Italian… Unfortunately, unless DH wants turkey again, I guess I need to cook. Grilled cheese and soup sounds good to me. Guess I should go ask him what he wants. I’m really not thinking “cooking”. Guess dinner is TBD.

Jana—I just thought masa was more flour, and polenta was more like coarse cornmeal or grits. I don’t know what kind of pan you were using, but Barkeeper’s Friend is great for cleaning hard to clean anything—especially stainless and glass. (Ask me how I know.) Have fun shopping!

Tina—you are just a baby! I’m old enough to be your mother. I can’t believe you were up so late quilting. My brain and eyes shut down way before I get to bed! I love both those salads! I will come for them and tamales!

As I said… dinner is TBD. Only leftover is turkey, and I’ll use a lot of it in my noodles tomorrow. Maybe I should visit the freezer. I’m so not in the cooking mood now. I’m headed to my sewing room…

Happy thanksgiving to each of you and your families!

Bon appétit!

My now ex. and I had just finished eating supper and sitting on the loveseat and when it came over the TV, with Walter Kronkite, we both numb and frightened. We shared an old English cottage with another American Air Force couple, so I went across the hallway and let them know. Our English neighbors were so gracious to us. It still resonates to this day that this could happen to us. It seems nothing is impossible anymore.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Hugs,

Helen
