SUPPER CLUB - Fri, Oct 27
Good morning!
Yesterday was productive. I finished off all my small WIP's but one -
a Van Gogh wall hanging of irises. It's together but just needs quilting. Then it's clean up the sewing room and figure out what's next. But one thing I know that HAS to be done today is launder the dog. He thinks when he hears "the dog smells doggy", it's a compliment. But he's wrong.
We had an impromptu invitation to a campfire gathering last night which was very nice. Campfires are high on my love-to-sit-around list. There were 8 people in all and all of the women were quilters. And all of the men were artists of various mediums - oils, glass, leather, welding, and my Bill with his quilting. So out came the phones to show off pictures!
JANA - one of the gals last night is doing a JN Bali wedding quilt. She sounded much like you sound with yours. Though she swore she'd never do another one! I do think that's my favorite JN pattern.
TINA - happy to share my recipe. But beware, even though the alcohol in the rum (3/4 cup!) cooks off, the flavor is still there. But the syrup that you pour over the cake after poking holes in the cake (1/2 cup!) is still full strength and definitely not for kids or for people on meds. If you don't like rum, you won't like this cake. But I imagine there are all kinds of things you could sub for the rum so everyone would like it.
JANA - You are going to be one busy mama! But you'll be long-lived because God wouldn't dare take you before you finished all those JN quilts! Sometimes I try to name all your kids on my fingers. I could never come up with the fifth one's name. Then I saw in the sew-in yesterday that you said you have four! lol!! Are you sure?? I could have sworn there were five!
BECCA - odd about the hospital, but if she's having a scheduled CSX and not in labor and the others are more "emergent", then I guess putting her on stand-by makes sense. I'm betting you have 7# twins. As for juries, both our friends who just served last year on different 6-week murder trials are way past 70. Perhaps that is a regional thing, or perhaps a city, county, state, federal thing.
IRISH - how did everything come out? hahahaha - sorry, couldn't resist. Bum joke. hahahaha - couldn't resist that one either. Sorry again.
My baked potato soup I made yesterday was so good! I've never actually made potato soup before so I was happy with how it turned out. Bill went back for seconds. But it made a really big pot so we'll be eating on it for a while.
I have soup to share . . .

Good morning from the cold plains. We have more freeze warnings for tonight. The wind really howled last night as the temperatures dropped. Yesterday was 80 degrees. Today will be 48, and tomorrow 52. Quite a change! Freezing nights, and of course I’m on Choc and Maggie duty all weekend starting now.
No sewing yesterday. I spent the day with my two sisters. My sister from town and I met my other sister from Arkansas in Joplin for lunch to celebrate her birthday. We had a real nice time visiting and catching up. I think my Arkansas sister will be having a hip replacement very soon. Everyone was happy to see me when I returned late yesterday afternoon. DH got dinner, calves got fed, and Hooligans got lots of love and treats. Life is good on the farm!
While I was out, UPS delivered my coffee order, Mom’s birthday present—her new Quilt Art Engagement Calendar for 2018, and a book for me: “New York Beauties & Flying Geese”. I looked through it last night, and I really need to find time for me sewing! It’s all paper pieced, but I am in love with both New York Beauty blocks and Flying Geese. What inspiration!!!
I know what Mom will say when I give her the gift I give her every year: “I’ll never live long enough to fill this up.” I’ve heard it for at least 10 years! She uses the calendars as a journal of her days, sewing, visits, calls, weather, etc. Some day they will be interesting to read… One of our friend’s mom died, and DH told her, “it happens to all of us, except for my wife—her mom is going to live forever!” They had a good laugh at that. Mom will be 99 next week!
Mary—I think I know what the “aging” juries is about… no one working wants to take time off to serve. The best jury pool left is retired persons.
BTW, Mary, I do have the clean-out and look-see tests. I’ve had two so far—last one in 2013. I’ll see if my doc wants me to get another this coming year when I see him. I do the interim tests as well. It’s definitely in our family. Your jokes… poor Irish!!!
Jana—Mom left Kansas during the war to clerk in the shipyards. I’m sure she was probably there in Richmond. I was born in Oakland. How neat to have a Rosie the Riveter memorial! I think my New York Beauties will be my JN journey! It's paper-pieced, too, but not nearly as complicated... at least I hope it's not!
Becca—I need more covers in winter, too, and my fleece jammies. It must be psychological, but I NEED my cocoon of blankets/quilts. DH seldom uses them. I need to put away my summer shoes, too.
Dinner tonight… hummmmm… I’m sure I can red up something out of the fridge. Right now I’m not inspired. I’m sure no one will starve.
Bon appétit!

Good morning!
Mary - there is five - I count my Stu as number 5, since we raised him from the time he was born, because of his dad's illness.
Dinner - leftovers from Zaxby's we ate last night.
I will get the bag I am working on dine this morning, then the next two are just cutting out the shapes and basting them to the paper. Then I will see what bag nine holds for me. I think the small tediuous piecing is done. Just the big pieces on the outside. We will see.
Enjoy!

Good afternoon from chilly but very sunny, SW. Pa.....Nice Fall day in the neighborhood......
Oh Mary, you are just too funny....Happy to report, everything did come out OK, lol and I did get a good report....When the doctor did come and talk to me, he said, we might repeat the test in a couple of years and I told him, "no thank you"....I really think these doctor's just want my body!
I saw Bill's pictures on FB, super nice...Not being a camper, I've missed out on the campfire sittings...Can't even say I can sit in front of a fireplace, darn.....(in my next house)....
Becca, isn't it amazing how much you can do while you're waiting for that important call...I was always glad when the kids would call after the babies were here, lol...Little by little I'm doing the closet season changing and not liking it...Sending prayers for Momma and the new babies.....
Chickie, sounds like your weather is pretty much the same as we're having and I'm not liking it, except for the sun...You really had a special day with your sisters, didn't you? What would we do without them....what you said about your Mom brought back memories about Jim's Mom....Each birthday, she's say, "you know I'm not going to be here next year" and Jim would always say, "how come, you planning a trip?"...
My yesterday was kind of "sister" filled also...She picked me up at 7:00 in the morning, sat through my test, then we went to breakfast and then on to Pat Catan's (a craft store that now has fabric)....It was a good day! One thing we laughed about, our neighbors have parents visiting from out of state and when they come, they sleep in their van, which is usually parked, almost in front of my house...Well, at midnight, the night before, I turned on the front light and put out the garbage, forgetting they were there..AND then early in the morning, my sister pulls up, with lights on and beeps the horn...I have a feeling, these people had to take an afternoon nap....
Today I'm going to do some baking and of course the never ending laundry..When I bring home Jim's laundry, I sometimes wonder how he can wear so many sweat pants and jeans in just 2 days???? And of course, I end up with other people's stuff too, which makes me wander who visits his room, lol.....
Not sure what I'll have for dinner, not much of an appetite, which is good sometimes....I do have a yellow squash I'd like to use so maybe.....Going to make apple squares to take to Jim and the girls where he stays......
You all have a great day...........
Happy eating...............
