Easy border

Post by Sewfriendly » Tue Feb 28, 2017 5:32 am

Making a basketball quilt with a panel in the center. A friend said I could keep enlarging it by making railroad like borders around it which I am doing. Was wondering if anyone ever did that or had pics? Each border gets a little larger on sides, than top. Hope you know what I'm talking about. This is my first post. Just joined. Thanks!

Welcome!

Yes, I have done that in several quilts that I have made. Just be sure before you add each border, that you measure the sides - then cut that border to their average length. Sew those borders on. Then do the same for the top and bottom. If you just add a width of fabric to the side or top by just cutting the strip off at the end, without measuring first, you could be adding in a dimension that will bring your quilt out of being a square or a rectangle. Which then makes it hard to put on a Long arm or hand quilt.

It is a quick way to add size to a quilt. You can even add a different border, such as sawtooth stars or half square triangles to give it a different look as you go.

Welcome to the group.

Jana gave you good pointers on the borders. You can always make a quilt larger that way but be sure to keep it squared up like Jana said.Best wishes on your quilt journey.
