SUPPER CLUB - Monday, Jan 16
Good Morning!
Well, I just slept through my first tornado watch ever. It might have been more exciting if I could have stayed awake. Bill said there was lots of L&T, some rain, but no real wind. It veered north of us and I missed it all. A small tornado did touch down not too far away and did a little damage, but nothing here. I'm NOT disappointed!
We had a nice visit with Cindy yesterday. Her hubby, Don, had to work so he missed a top notch Mexican lunch. I delivered all the hugs everyone asked me to share. Time always goes so fast when you are having a good time!
Our truck finally goes into the shop this morning to fix the tailgate issue. If you will remember, we dropped our trailer onto the bed of the pick-up while in Yuma in early Dec. The tailgate took the brunt of the impact but there was a bit of damage to the truck, too. Because it will require painting after the repairs, the truck will be gone the entire week. Hopefully we stocked up on everything we'll need for that week but our friends said they will help us out if necessary. These friends have been so good to us! They've babysat Scottie for us all day long, too. Twice. That includes picking up boom-booms! And they got the NFL package in their TV contract just so we could watch Seahawk games while we were down here. You can bet they will be getting a quilt - a Lone Star (never made one before!) - as soon as I can get one made after we get home.
IRISH - How did Jim's appointment go? I watched most of your Steelers game last night until I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. But word around the trailer is that they won. congrats!
BECCA - sounds like a sweet day at your house with all the little ones! I miss having little people in our family. But my DGS, Drew, has a good job, just bought his first house, and I hear he may have a girlfriend. So perhaps in a few years . . . . I think my BC Cookbook has caramel icing recipe in it.
CAROL - how was the movie? What a great and novel way to get girls interested in math and science! I always loved science as a kid. I think it's fascinating to know WHY and HOW and WHEN about everything! But I love history, too. Math - not so much. We leave here January 28th. I'm in no rush, but I know I'll be ready by then. I'm starting to smell the barn. I heard Bill tell a friend yesterday that he wants to spend 2 full weeks in Quartzsite, AZ on the way home. He's only told ME that he wants to stop there "for a bit". haha! I know my hubby. We'd be parked out on the dessert with no friends, no hook-ups, no real town. With a generator, I can sew all day, but he has no hobbies with him. He'll last four days I bet, not fourteen! We should be home by our anniversary, Feb 14th. ;o) (25 yrs, by the way)
CHICKIE - are you all melted now from your ice storm? I saw a quilt in a magazine yesterday that looked almost like the photos you sent - everything covered in ice and one little speck of red - a cardinal.
TINA - praying your parents' move goes off without too much upheaval for them or trouble for you.
JANA - Yoo hoo!! Supper's ready!!
Supper tonite was going to be those pinto beans, but we both have leftovers from the Mexican restaurant yesterday so I'll add a salad to those and we'll be all set! But beans tomorrow!
Have you got a plan yet?

Hello everyone,Nice sunny day here.Men are working on HAC unit.Sure pray it all gets taken care of.
Maryz We had a really bad storm here one nite & I slept thru it while Mom & DH paced the floors. We were out of school for a wk due to power lines & trees in roads. It was a early bad one.Uprooted about 20 trees up in our woods.
Glad you found such great friends.Know they would love the quilt.
Chickie I saw pictures of KA.Sure hope you & the farm are ok & DH .It looked bad.
Irish I watched some of the game but went to bed before it ended.Glad your team won.
And hope it was a great day for you & Jim.My DS wrote me that his sons & him thought that Papa was the best they had seen him in a long time.He did enjoy them all.We both love the little ones.
Carol I have never been a science or Math fan.Know it's good to be good students in both.My DGDs both loved them & excel in them both.Hope you enjoyed the movie.
TinaPrsyers for a smooth move.Know it's a touchy situation.
Jana Know your family is busy like always.
Have a great day everyone. Its pizza day here & salad. Becca
Carmel Icing
1 stick butter
1 cup brown sugar.Recipe calls for 1/3 dark & 2/3 light brown sugar
1/3 cup cream or canned milk
Cook stirring constantly until it comes to a boil.Remove from heat .Add 2 cups of sifted powered sugar.Add the sugar slowly & stir to avoid lumps.Should be creamy & Smooth.Spread on cake. I make a recipe & a half for a big cake as my family loves the icing .
I got this recipe from a lady in her 80s that used to come to our covered dish dinners at a Christmas cooperative group we belonged to years ago.She always made one every year & had a pound cake for the cake she iced.It was always a hit at the party.

Good Morning!
Mary - I have made a couple of Lone Star quilts. El's Radiant Star book is great on cutting and directions . In my teacher training class, we worked on that block. One word of advice, when you pick the colors for the diamonds in the star - you want the outside edge of the ring to make it pop. A strong color. El has a tutorial on how to make it on here.
I made two for my mom. The first was for her blue room and the second was for her pink bedroom. I had some beautiful pieces in the pink one, but brought in a soft blue and a soft green. Showed her the sample diamond and she looked at me and told me it was to be all Pink! So I redid the sample and got away with the baby blue. It is all pink! Then she wanted it warm, so that meant a very thick Batt, and I was to hand quilt it. I cheated and machined a stitch in the ditch around the diamonds in the star, but hand quilted a cable feather wreath in each of the corners and triangles. The Batt was over a inch thick! Took awhile, but got it done. But after all that work, I put it on her bed and it stayed there for one night - it was too heavy according to Her! Got to love Them! I did that room up beautifully, made drapes, bed skirt, and pillow shams too. Oh well, I now have the quilt.
Humm, after that book, dinner - a soup of some sort.
Enjoy!

Good early afternoon from chilly but not cold, semi dreary or maybe semi sunny, depending on the window you look out...Of course, the dreary might be due to looking out a dirty window, right, lol.....
1st of all, as some of you know, Chriss has a secret and if you want to know what it is, just send her a PM...Of course, me being the nosy person I am, had to know and jumped on it right away...AND me being a person who has a very hard time keeping secrets could be persuaded to share....Just send a message and I'll get back to you....
Mary, I'd say, you are a sound sleeper but maybe that's for the best...The only time, we've ever had a warning, we were to go to the basement...I gathered up the fur kids and we all stood in the garage in front of the door (that has 4 windows) and watched for the tornado to come up the valley, which never came...What were we thinking, duh! Does it seem like your days are going by fast? Seems like we just pulled out of your driveway....
Yes, our Steelers did win and it was all because of our kicker...He scored all the points...Now it's on to New England and I already saw, where their coach warned everyone up there, not to mess with our Terrible Towel.....
Becca, so glad to hear about your DH...Boy, that means a lot....And your carmel recipe sounds a lot like the one my Mom used to make....I just might have to give Jim a treat one of these days, I know he'll love it.....
Chickie, I sure hope you are OK and not still ice covered...Seeing some of the scenes on TV makes a person realize the power of Mother Nataure.....Please be careful.....
Well, Jim's appointment is this afternoon and for awhile, I thought we might cancel...He's having a "mixed up" kind of day...But, we're going to give it a go and then hopefully stop at my sisters afterwards...I had made her one of those attic window panels with a deer scene and need to drop it off...Then pick up my RX and finally, do the "chicken/noodle soup drive thru".......
Funny story, the other day when we stopped at JoAnn's, I only needed white fabric for the blocks for Tina...I picked up my white and then Jim said, is that all you're getting???? Well, far be it for me not to comply and ended up with 2 more pieces for more blocks....Now to get them done and in the mail, lol.....
Right now, I'm hoping our dinner will be that chicken noodle soup but who knows...My sister (who is a great cook) might set a couple of extra plates at the table....I can only hope!
Happy eating.................

Re: SUPPER CLUB - Monday, Jan 16
Good evening! We survived the ice! Yesterday when we thought we were past the worst, the power went out for around 4 hours. A branch had fallen on the lines and broke them, so we waited for the power company. Everyone from DGS (Ava’s family), our neighbors across the road, us and I think DS3 (Choc and Maggie’s dad) were without. I had Choc and Maggie duty yesterday and today. Actually, our ice was nothing compared with some of the other areas. One of the big trees at DGS’s lost a big branch. Those trees have been there for probably 100 years… so sad to see them slowly falling apart. They are two tall cedars. Today we made it to 50 degrees, and into the 40s yesterday. All told, I dumped 2” of water from the rain/snow/ice gauge today. I think it soaked in well and didn’t run off.
Mary—our cedars here “explode” pollen as well. We thought there was a fire one day… investigation revealed the pollen had puffed into “smoke” clouds. It’s quite the phenomenon… very startling to see and think “fire!” Some of our cedars get super tall and have thick trunks. Those are the ones DH used for the cedar planking to line the living room wall and wainscot the hallway. Glad you made it through the night without blowing away! Too bad Don missed the lunch! I bet the quilt is wonderful!
That commercial would be funny! Save the TT at the expense of a shirt! Good thing it wasn’t a Steelers’ shirt! Poor baby!!!
Becca—the caramel cake must be divine! I’ll write off the recipe. It’s not the burnt sugar recipe but must look like it—creamy and smooth. Grandma used to brown her white sugar in a cast iron skillet then add the butter and cream.
Carol—my “textbook” in my junior high foods class was my BC cookbook. I think mine was probably a 1957 model, since that’s when I took it. My original was lost in the fire, but I’ve acquired another since—it’s vintage, just not quite the same. Mine was splattered and stained with some of the pages hanging by reinforcements. I really want to see Hidden Figures. I really liked Geometry in school—less liked was algebra. I didn’t have anything higher. When I was in school, girls were practically barred from physics, chemistry and higher math… no encouragement whatsoever. I loved science classes—biology and physiology. I hated the “girl” classes. However, my 10th grade typing and 11th grade shorthand served me well as I made a career as an executive secretary.
Irish—so sorry you didn’t get the “drive through” soup! I don’t think any team has the old gentleman players any more… all the money grabbers selling out to who has the biggest coffers… I’m there with you on the box! I don’t think that’s proper behavior for a tornado warning, but I’ve been guilty of the same actions. We watched one coming for us, then dove into the interior bathrooms at the church just before it hit. Thankfully, we were all safe although the church was totally destroyed.
Jana—I love the lone star quilts! I had one … saw photos of it today. Sigh! I have a difficult time pleasing my mom. My niece and my sister can do the exact same thing, but mine is bad and theirs is exactly what she wanted. Go figure. I know how you feel! Glad you have the quilt anyway! I took a “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” workshop with Billie Lauder ages ago, and we made table toppers using the method.
Today DH made me a chandelier for over the island in the kitchen. He used the matching wheel from my pot rack he made before Christmas. I’m quite pleased with the results. I cleaned floors and rearranged furniture… glad not to be cooking tonight.
Hope you all stay safe in the weather that may come your way. Thank you all for your concern on our behalf!
I need to look at getting dinner here. I think it will be re-runs… t**a helper with smoked amberjack and broccoli, maybe fajitas… pizza sounds good… maybe later in the week… fridge needs emptying.
