SUPPER CLUB - Monday, Sept 5th
Good Morning!
I guess none of us made it to the table yesterday. We had to get up at 0500 (like usual) and take our friends to the airport - a 45-min drive each way, and then we met my DB and SIL for breakfast. By the time we got home again it was after 0900 and we dove into the day's activities. I just never got on the computer I guess.
We are babysitting our friends' little dog, Chili. He's a white maltese/poodle mix and cute as can be. Scottie is thrilled because he thinks we got him the little brother he's always wanted and they play hard all day long. But the cats think they could do without this brother business. Chili is used to sleeping on the bed. But in our house, the cats get the bed, so that didn't fly well here. It was a hot time in our bed last night, let me tell you! And the cats won! After about 2 hours Chili was escorted to his kennel so we could all sleep.
In spare moments I've been working on a few small Christmas gifts - table runners, decorative pillows, etc. I am making a table topper now from a MSQC pattern but they say to use their small wedge ruler, which I don't have, to cut triangles. I know it's 4-1/2" tall but they don't give the measurement of the base across the bottom of the ruler so I could just cut them myself. I refuse to be forced to buy another one of their rulers just for one project. Eleanor never tries to force us to buy more rulers just to make one of her patterns. She gives alternate measurements or provides cardboard templates in her books. Does anyone here have that ruler and could tell me the width of the triangle base?
As for supper - we might grill burgers and add frozen tater tots and salad. Sort of a traditional end of summer cook-out. What's the supper story at your house?

Happy Labor Day from a sunny but (to me) still chilly, Sw. Pa...But, we're going to be summer like once again...Here in our part of the country, we didn't get any of the nasty hurricane that is causing havoc up and down the coast....Just hoping all those beach goers, my Nick included, has a safe, holiday....
Mary, your house sounds like a "happening" place...Always something going on or people coming and going....I can imagine the 2 fur pups having the time of their life...And if the cats are anything like our's, they'd just as soon not have "company dogs" visiting....I think the only rulers I have are the ones that Eleanor had included in patterns or those cardboard templates....But, knowing you, you will figure it out.....
One thing I did forget to tell you and others was, when my friend Linda took Monty to her Vet for heart worm and flea stuff the vet told her, because of her bout with chemo, she shouldn't use any of the flea stuff you put on the back of their necks....In petting your pet, that gets on your skin and would be dangerous to a Chemo patient or ne that had had treatments...She ended up with a chewable flea pill....Just a word of warning, if you all know of someone......
Yesterday, Jim was kind of antsy so we took a ride to a farm...We came home with so many goodies and the tomatoes are unbelievable...If I hadn't been driving, I'd have been sampling...Couldn't wait to make a big old salad......And then of course we had the Notre Dame game last night and they lost in overtime..It's really sad, but Jim has lost interest in his team, only watched a little bit of it....When I think of all the years of Notre Dame football and how we didn't dare plan anything on a football Sat...No wedding, no babies and heaven forbid if anyone died., lol...It is sad to see how the brain works, sometimes......
Today, being Labor Day just happens to be our oldest DS's 61st birthday and he was born on Labor Day...Another funny story, being our 1st, I had no idea what to expect and really didn't know I was in labor...Had some twinges and finally we decided to go to the hospital..We checked in about 4:00 and young Jim checked in at 4:17...Being a holiday, our regular doctor was away and the poor "wet behind the ears" doc who was on call, didn't make it to the delivery room on time....2 years later, my sister had her 1st on Labor Day also, but she had a doctor, lol.....Not sure when young Jim passed me by in age........
For our dinner, if we stay home, we will have burgers on the grill, a couple of ears of corn and I made a little potato salad....And of course we have those super tomatoes...............
Happy eating...........Enjoy your holiday......

Good morning,
The house is back to its quiet dull roar. Daniel and family just left to head back to California. Karlie sat in Grandpa's lap just before they left and went back to sleep. She is very good in the car for long trips.
Dinner here will be leftover creations. Tonight i am turning part of the hamburger gravy into sauce for stroganoff. Just ading a little garlic and sour cream. A couple of the baked potatoes will be diced up and frozen, in individual servings for hash browns. We had a small ham lsst night and Sarah yook the bone home to make split pea soup. It will be quite interesting to see how i can use up these leftovers.
Well, need to scoot,
Enjoy,
Jana

Happy Labor Day! I’m celebrating by watering, picking tomatoes, cooking brunch and next cleaning floors… Somehow it doesn’t mean “take a break from labor” here.
Irish—I, too, have a labor day birth story… my DD was due on labor day. She was born on July 28. There was a major thunderstorm, and the doc barely arrived in time. My water had broken a week before that, so I was already in the hospital. At least I didn’t have to go the month of August in Kansas without air conditioning. DD was fine, just tiny and came home in 3 weeks. Funny, she’s now my age, too! LOL! I’m so sorry that Jim has lost his interest in his teams. It was always cute to read about your black armbands. That’s interesting about the flea meds and chemo patients. I’ll keep it in mind. I apply ours (before I got the pills this past time) before bedtime so I avoid petting or touching for at least 8+ hours. This new stuff still seems to be working… Your farm visit sounds wonderful! I have cherry tomatoes, but that’s all. The squash bugs and gr*****oppers are getting a lot of them. I don’t want to use Sevin as it’s toxic to bees, so I’m sharing with the other insects.
Mary—the fur must be flying at your house! Tinker Bell and Boomer have been playing a lot recently. Odie is not really interested. He’s more the sedate observer. Silly thing! Chili sounds so cute! Isn’t he probably about the size of the cats only with a bark? Sorry I couldn’t help you with a ruler. I wish she had templates to copy in the back of her books. I guess if she has a ruler, she doesn’t provide a template or measurements, which is too bad. Maybe we should start an e-mail campaign requesting templates or measurements. I buy some of the rulers when they are on “deal of the day” and not pay full price. I don’t get all of them.
Jana—your church story was too funny! Three little ones trying to sit on your lap at once!!! I’m sure everyone was amused. I love your creative ways with leftovers! All sounds yummy! Know you are missing your brood!
Becca—Sounds like a pretty day there. We are warming up again. You can feel fall in the air, even when it gets hot. Some of the leaves are turning and falling—the early black walnut trees. The sky is taking on that fall sapphire blue.
Saturday after visiting Mom, I went to Pittsburg and met my DD when she got off work. We went to the guild quilt show over there. We saw maybe 150 quilts… many QOV, a bunch of t=shirt quilts, some cute, some beautiful… I managed to spend $Zero at the vendors!!! I didn’t really need fabric, and some wasn’t cheap. One vendor had new Janome machines there, but I didn’t try anything out. I brought back chicken for our dinner.
Oh, Mary—there was a cute RV quilt there… all appliqué that had blocks for each one of the family members’ family with their RVs and pets, etc. I wish I had snapped a picture for you.
Yesterday evening was the local volunteer fire department’s fund raiser—dinner and street dance. We went up and had the pulled pork sandwiches that are always delicious. DH visited with some of his coffee buddies, and then we came home. Our kids and GKs and DDILs are fire dept/auxiliary, so they were involved in cooking and serving.
Tonight’s dinner will be the left-over chicken, salad, broccoli, and corn. I never made it to the grocery store Saturday, so a trip to town is on the agenda this week. I think there are some cookies for dessert.
Now… off to clean the floors. UGH!!! A fate worse than death! I’d rather be sewing!!! Happy Labor Day!
