Good morning!

Fall is certainly here! Yesterday our maple leaves were falling like snow. The yard will be keeping me busy when we get back from wine-tasting. Unless it's rainy.

TINA - you are right - it was the other thing you fed us. I will try this new recipe one day in the near future.

CAROL7 - I graduated in 1969. I took my home ec at the voc/tech school next door during my junior year. I had 4-1/2 months of cooking, 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. Then I had 4-1/2 months of sewing. I LOVED it all! And still have my textbook and use it!

LADY CAROL - it's tough being retired. There's never a day off! Your club choices sound fun. I don't think I'd join the book club either. I love reading, but I don't really enjoy the type of books that I hear most book clubs want to read/discuss. So I'd be off to the craft club with you!

CHICKIE - so how was your carne asada? You have a lot of dog at your house when you add them all up! any idea how old Boomer is?

BECCA - I'd be switching dentists, too, if he's trying to force you to pay for services you don't want. Pinto beans! I hadn't had them in years, but my sister made them while we were camping a few weeks ago. I thought they were yummy (my sis is a great cook!) but DH didn't like them at all.

JANA - your house will be full! What a great "'tivity" to teach your girls - homemade bread-making. My mom was a blue-ribbon baker. She won lots of ribbons with all kinds of baked goods, especially bread. My Autumn inherited that from her. Anything Aut bakes is amazing. Things I bake are, let's just say, "eye-opening". lol!

You asked what's wrong with Scottie. This being a 'food thread' you probably don't want the down and dirty details of how our life has been going with a sick dog with a 7" long coat, but let it suffice that today we are calling the vet and picking up a boatload of Imodium. And buying more doggie shampoo.

Today will be a little bit of cleaning - just enough to keep the house-sitter from going "Eeewwww!" while we are gone. Then Costco and grocery store for a few groceries. Then packing said groceries into the trailer. We're not sure how long we'll be gone, but less than a week. I'd like to be home by next Wed at the latest.

You all eat your veggies now!

Mary, poor Scottie......ummmmm are you sure you want to go on a trip with him right now......I had a bad visual.
Frankie prefers pinto beans over any other, it took me a while to like them but now I do :-)

Tonight will be chicken, not sure yet how I'll fix it.....hmmmmmm. I need to think on this a bit.
Tomorrow for lunch we're meeting Mom and Dad :-)
Tina

Sorry about forgetting the lime juice for the Carne Asada.

Good morning! Tonight’s dinner will be the carne asada. I marinated it overnight and added some meat tenderizer. This was some SUPER TOUGH meat we butchered, and it has to be marinated, tenderized, ground before it’s edible. I thought the carne asada would work well. I sliced it up thin against the grain while it was still slightly (mostly) frozen. I’ll for sure let you know how it is! Hopefully it hasn’t tenderized to mush… oh well, it will be good scooped up in tortillas in any case.

Mary—you are just a youngster! Carol-- I took my home ec in 7th and 8th grade by ancient women (my foods teacher retired after our year). My foods classes were just like the pictures of the 50s home ec classes in the fabrics in Nancy’s Notions catalog. We wore full coverage aprons—startched to cardboard stiffness, and headbands to match with our name embroidered on them. They had bias tape ties to go under our hair. The aprons and headbands were, of course, homemade by us since we had sewing in 7th grade and knew how to make them… right! I learned so much from both of those classes!!! They were the foundations for everything I know today about sewing and cooking. I learned to sew on the treadle machines in the sewing room, and you wouldn’t believe what our “kitchens” looked like in foods. They were ancient 2-burner gas cast iron “shelves” above our chemistry lab tables. There were two “modern” (40s or 50s) ranges with ovens in the classroom. We were very outdated and primitive in 1957 and 1958. I tried home ec in senior high and dropped out because it was so boring and dreadful. My daughter took something related to home ec at least in title, but it was anything but. She can’t sew despite my trying to “help”. Thankfully DGD likes sewing with me. She wants to design clothes and sew them, but I started her with quilts!

Off soapbox… DH arrived for brunch! I’m meeting Lyn in a couple of hours in Parsons as they pass through on their way to TX.

Hello everyone,Already got my errands & groceries finished.Beautiful day here but much cooler, low 40s this AM.

Oh the tales of home ec.My Teacher was a duzzie.I never learned anything really. My Mother taught me cooking & baking. She was a great bread baker but I didn't get the gene.and my Aunt taught me to sew.Now it isn't taught in most schools.

We have enjoyed the pintos.I cook them with a lot of thick broth.Yummy.

Carol Lady I would jump at a chance to join the craft club.Nothing like that here.I do enjoy the church group of ladies quilting.

I bought kale to cook & we will finish the beans, only a few left. Will add cooked apples.
Becca DH has his Apple fritters

It just occurred to me that I never mentioned SUPPER! Maybe that was because did couldn't come up with an idea - but now I have one - leftover mashed potatoes fried into patties, eggs, and sliced tomatoes. I'm cleaning the fridge!

Scottie is on an antibiotic now, with a canned high-fiber food to mix into his dry food. Labs are still out, but the thought is he might have picked up giardia while camping or his new bag of food could be a bad batch. Vet said he should show improvement within 12 hours. Poor dog had to have two hiney-baths by 10:30 am!

Good afternoon from sunny but chilly, SW. Pa...

Mary, you certainly have your day planned..Busy, busy, busy! Poor Scottie, hate it when the fur kids aren't feeling good....Our leaves really haven't started to fall but this weekend we might get our 1st frost and then they'll come down...I got some new gutter guards and I'm hoping Terry will be able to put them up before too many leaves make their home in those said gutters....

Chickie, your HomeEc sounded a lot like mine...We had the same teacher for both cooking and sewing and she was what you would really call an old maid, had to be at least 110. ..Was kind of funny, in sewing we made aprons and each evening, I'd go home with another girl's project in my bag and my mother would finish it....All the girls had great grades that semester...In cooking, I don't remember ever cooking, just listening to her read the recipes and the directions and how not to blow up the gas stove......

Becca, I'm with you on the craft club...That would be great...So often I've thought about starting something like that but never followed through.....

Lady Carol, just being retired means there's not enough hours in the day...I go to the Library and think the same thing, so many book, so little time...I guess, if I cut out my little naps and maybe the lunches, I might get more accomplished, (not)....

Today, I'm firing up the sewing machine in the basement, making sure it's in shape for DGS, Dan and his gal....I have decided, since I won't be watching the Steelers, I can't be using my Steeler tote so, I picked up some Pgh. Penguin fabric and it's ready to be sewed....Threw the flannel sheets in the washer so I can do my dancing between the 2 machines.....Now tell me, is this a fun afternoon or what????

Dinner will be, beef tips, gravy, mashed potatoes and a veggie of my choice (since I'm the only one that eats them).....We have really, really good ice cream sandwiches from Mr. Schwan for afters......

Happy eating...................

Good afternoon,

Had a post early today, and the site wouldn't load - saved it for later and closed that window! My dumb!

I had home ec in the 7th grade - 1/2 the year sewing, the other cooking. The sewing was a joke, just how to sew straight and control the speed of the machine. I knew how to do that already, and the only cooking I remember was the fudge we made. My group's didn't set up as fast as everyone else's. So it went in the refrig overnight. The only batch in the class that got a A grade! High school had food class, but I didn't take it, just ate their creations. The best cinnamon rolls in the world. Huge and hot every day at 10 am. The school smelled heavenly!

Dinner - that's easy - the hashbrown cassarole- it will be cooked today! Nothing will get in the way. Right, around here - if you believe that, I have the deed to a large orange bridge in California that I will sell you! LOL

Enjoy,
Jana

This is quick and late! I got to meet Lyn (WeeOne) and her DH in Parsons for lunch as they were traveling south on 59 for Texas and the Houston Quilt Show. We had a delightful visit--such truly nice people!

Tina, I fixed your Carne Asada for dinner... DELICIOUS!!! Another one of those Mexican dishes that DH found he really liked and ate heartily!!! Thank you!!! It wasn't too spicy, and I may add more heat to it next time.

I'll be back tomorrow... hopefully earlier!
