Rough Weekend

As you know I have not been feeling since February/March. I had no insurance so I did not go to the doc. I applied for insurance and kept waiting to be approved. Finally on June 1 I was approved so I called the Pulaski Health Center and was told the earliest appt I could have was July 18. In the meantime I just kept getting sicker. So July 18 I go to the doc. We do all the yearly stuff, diagnoses me with depression and attributes all of ailments to the depression. I have bloodwork done, Robbyn and I get groceries and we grab some lunch. On the way home I say to Robbyn I am feeling exhausted and when we get home I am going to lay down. I no more sit on the couch and the Health Center calls. They tell me my bloodwork came back as "urgent-critical" and I had to go to the ER immediately. SO robbyn and I get back in Hummy and drive to Oswego. When we get there I learn that my blood count is 3.4. The lowest alloweable level is 11. I received 2 blood transfusions that afternoon and was admitted. I had two more blood transfusions Saturday and had 2 iron transfusions. It appears I have been making sure the kids while I would grab a cup of soup or part of a sandwich here and there.

On Sunday my blood level was up to 8.6. They wanted to keep me til it reached 11 but my insurance would not pay for another day so I was discharged with lots of vitamins, supplements, iron and a high blood pressure pill. I have to eat 1200 calories a day of which I need to eat 90 grams of protein. Today I ate 500 calories and had 50 grams of protein. I am so stuffed I can't eat another bite. But it is a start! I feel better today than I have in the last nine months!

And I have had no alcohol since last Thursday!!

I felt so good today that my sister and I planned for me to come to her house the end of the month, go to a concert with her and then go to Boston for 2 days after the concert!

Thank you for all of your prayers and thoughts. I think I made a turning point and a start - I still have a long way to go, but it is one day at a time!

Deb, I had that happen to me with levels that low. I got mine fixed with iron supplements. If I would have been older they said at the time (I was 40), they would have done the transfusions. Best wishes to you! Can you drink supplement protein shakes to get the calories you need? 500 calories isn't enough for your brain to function properly let alone muscles and other organs. I hope you have turned a corner with your health!

Farmchick reading your info, RE: protein shakes sounds like a delicious idea. Perhaps, it would help my energy through the winter months. Feel tired more lately.. Could get used to drinking more shakes..

Pardon my ignorance, don't think I ever had a shake. Buying from Mcdonalds or public venue found to be high in sugar. Made from home is milk? fruits? icecream? and blend? Is that a shake? Again, help me with this.. Just dumb in this department.. Then, their is smoothies, do share your.. My calcium intake is from Cheese products and not to keen on fish or milk.. Whip cream and buttermilk I'm OK..
