New quilter, I want to sell! But how?

Post by TaylorHuntress » Tue Sep 24, 2013 6:11 am

So I got a sewing machine from my husband ( fiancé then) for Christmas and used it once. whatever i was trying to make turned out terrible so it was put away for about eight months. I go it out a couple months ago and made these really cute cushion covers for our couch. Those turned out better than expected so then I made pillow covers for the pillows on our couch. Those turned out great too so then I shopped for cheap pillow forms and made about fifteen more! After that I had a bunch of extra fabric so I then attempted to make a quilt. I just kinda winged it and did it the easy way, and maybe it's not even a real "quilt" but it is da*n cute! I've almost got two more made. Anyways, I was wondering how to price them and where I could possibly sell them.. I don't know where to start. If anyone could help that'd be awesome! Thanks :)

Oh, I'll send pictures upon requst, I'm not sure how to do it on here.

There is a formula for how to price quilts, but I'm not exactly sure what it is. Basically cost of materials plus time spent times how much you want to make per hour.
There are a lot of websites specfically for home crafters to sell their crafts. I would recommand Googleing for more information.

The formula I've heard is 3 times the cost of the materials ( fabric, thread, etc. ). I usually just price them what I feel I want to get for them. Higher if I don't really mind taking it back, lower if I want it to sell! :)
My suggestion would be to start out at local fairs that are starting for fall and the holidays, then you could move on to Esty or EBay on line. You may want to be prepared for people who will ask you if you'll make one in the style or colors they want. And always get at least 1/2 of the money if you agree to do that. It covers your costs at least, and makes them less likely to " forget " that they wanted it.

PS I would love to see some pictures of your work. You have to use Photobucket for this site.

Hi I heared from the lady at hobby lobby that it's 3 times what you spent for the material. That's also what they use here at the quilt club.

Sell ideas: I live Wpg. a difficult place to sell. I managed to recover costs of ingredients when sewing. Yard sale, sell commission, @ craft boutiques, joined quilt quild, (get fabric donated)& vendors (free), joined a business club where won a trophy, create a flyer,(photocopy) deposit in mailbox, another wear a jog shirt with huge embroidery logo or upper right, people notice. If computer is your ability, power point print window decal to cling on car window or house. Even a simple wood square in front hse, (security issue?)

I've make myself clothes, wear it, walk into classic business clientele coffee shop, get the looks and say: "you like my dress, wonder where bought?" "make you one?" If health clinic staff have pants requiring alterations I will ask if I can help? Be outgoing, don't be shy. You have talent.. It's hard but possible. It takes nerve and time...

Pricing method: Charge extra $8.00-$10.00 per garment labor not a factor. Stores are production lines and one can't compete with these costs. Now I have reached a confident level in my sewing and known in my area, annoying or not, and could open shop, I have a ktn people come for the ktn, I live on a bus stop, I'm out there raking leaves and start gab. Some don't like it. But anything to be noted. Have I gotten you inspired?
