SMOCKING
I couldn't think of another place to ask this question. Does anyone on here smock? I want to make baby bonnets for my new-to-be granddaughter, due in 23 days!
I don't have time to use my pleater and do the hand smocking, BUT I do have some of those beautiful pre-smocked fabrics that I got to make little maternity tops... and didn't get enough. I was wondering why I couldn't take a 7" or 7 1/2" piece of that and shape the back, add ribbons, etc.
Does anyone know why this wouldn't work? If it did, wouldn't it be just so easy to make lots, and little dresses or shoes from the extra length!

Re: SMOCKING
Congrats on the new grandbaby. Sorry, I don't know the answer, but it sounds like a really cute idea, especially with little shoes to match!
Good luck.

Re: SMOCKING
I have been thinking about this and think that it will work - especially if you use a casing and a drawstring to make the back of the bonnet. I have seen this done on other bonnets - just take a straight piece - this would go over the head - from ear to ear - in the back edge of that piece make a casing for a ribbon - thread the ribbon through to gather the shape up tight to form a small oval. Knot or sew this together and then add the front - brim or lace or what ever - you can clean finish the edges with matching ribbon or bias.
I hope that you can follow this idea - congrats on the new granddaughter! They are so sweet!

It seems to me that it would work. I'd give it a try if I were you.
