Recipe for Homemade Best Press

Post by toekeyotow » Thu Apr 25, 2013 2:44 am

This is the recipe "like" Best Press starch.

Mix together:
1 tsp scented essential oil (found in Walmart candle supplies aisle and they have lots of scents) Note: scent is optional if allergic to scents.
3 oz. vodka (YES vodka) LOL
Then add to 24oz distilled water in large spray bottle and shake well.
(Hint: Vodka is made from potatoes , a natural starch.)
..
Add one drop of food color per gallon (optional)

My mom went and got the supplies for it today and she got linen scent and it smells so good! With all the ingredients it was under $15 to make 2 gallons and one small bottle of Best Press costs you that much! I love saving money with quilting :)

Sounds great - vodka is used in several things that I know of - nonstick spray - uses lecithin and vodka - just use in a spray bottle.

Thanks

My problem here in Utah, is that I can't just run over to the store and get the vodka - it has to be the state run liquor store! Lol Guess I will do it the old way!

My only question is why would you add food coloring? I see it is optional and a very small amount so I am assuming it wouldn't stain the fabric. Love all these home-made recipes that are all over Facebook (and now here)!

This is an old thread, but I hope someone can answer this. Most Vodka is made from grain, not potatoes. I thought I could find a cheap Vodka to use for this, but the store I went to didn't have 'potato' Vodka at any price :(

MJSR....I wondered after reading your post so went out to google and this is what I found.....

Vodka is made by the process of distillation of a fermented substance--often potatoes and rye or wheat grain--and less often, sugar beet molasses. Most vodka was traditionally made from potatoes and corn, but in recent years, most high-quality brands of vodka has been distilled from cereal grains. The potatoes and grains are heated until the starch is released and converted to sugar. Then this substance, called a mash, is fermented and heated to a high temperature to allow distillation to occur.

Guess there is starch in lots of things but potatoes have the most.

I may have to try this recipe. Thanks for bringing it back to top by your post. God bless you and any pressing you have to do. Have a great day. Shirley Mae
