Maryq posted the Apple Crisp recipe. I haven't made it yet but glad to know it was yummy. I am really really wanting to make it but trying to get a few more lbs off before the holidays.

My starter for Amish Friendship Bread (Busyhands125's recipe) was ready yesterday and I baked two loaves of it. OMG!...ya'll have to try it, it is soooooo good! Pat told me you could freeze the starter if you wanted, so since there are 4 starters left after the first baking and I don't know anyone who bakes...I'm going to freeze 3 of mine and stagger them out so I can bake this bread at least once a week. This first batch I used vanilla pudding and added raisins. I'm thinking about next time using pumpkin pudding and adding cranberries for Halloween. Oh man is it ever good, thanks so much for sharing this recipe, Pat.

Ya'll have been posting so many good-sounding recipes, I'm going to print this out and try them a try.

"Apple Dumplings"
2- Cups Sugar
2 cups water
1/4 Tea cinnamon
1/4 cup butter
Add sugar, water and butter to pot Boil 5 minutes at the end of five minutes take off the stove add the cinnamon..let set until you make the dumplings.
To make the dumplings:
6-8 apples
2 cups flour
1 tsp salt or 1/2 with self rising flour
3/4 cup shortening
1/2 cup milk
1 tea baking soda....this is if you use plain flour...I use self rising and omit the baking soda and use only 1/2 tea salt....
Cut apples and core....make up your dough...put flour ,and shortening in bowl add salt..mix until crumbly..add the milk until thoroughly mixed...turn out onto floured surface roll out big enough to cover your apple or apples..add the apple to it...should make 6......Now, I use apples i cooked and cooled with sugar and cinnamon already in the cooked mixture.....put that into you dough and roll up and pinch the top...either way you want to bake it....whole apple or cooked ones...pour your water sugar mixture over the dumplings and bake on 375 for 25-30 minutes....sauce thickens...when pulled out of the oven ladle sauce on top of the dumplings......Enjoy!!

I found a great book today, the newest in the Elm Creek Quilts series. It is not only a good story but is full of recipes of the food that is discussed in so many of the other books. The book is called The Quilter's Kitchen. I didn't know there was another book in the series until I saw it at the book store today.

I'm on a diet half the time so I don't make these often.

http://groups.msn.com/QuiltingAroundthe ... toID=22036

These are best made assembly style and any time you spend on prep work is time well spent.

Needed -
caramels - love the new meltaway chips without wrappers
apples or pretzels or BOTH.
Pecan chips ( the really small ones )
milk chocolate chips
White chocolate chips or bark
paper plates - freezer paper - sticks for apples

Step one.
Line cookie sheets with parchment or freezer paper
Clean off refrig. shelves or rearrange contents so you can slide in cookie sheets on top of contents
clean and dry apples
Have pretzels lined up or close by and easy to reach
Pour pecan pieces onto a med-large paper plate

Step two
Melt caramel ( just to the point of being melted, don't over heat it or it will be brittle later )
Dip pretzel in warm caramel just enough to give a light coating.
Immediately roll in pecan pieces
Place on cookie sheet - repeat until sheet is full or caramel is gone.
Once full place in icebox. When I do the same to apples, I put on small paper plate. The waxiness to the plate makes the apple not stick.

Step Three
While the Yums are chilling..
Wash pot and use to melt the milk chocolate ( heat just to the point you can drizzle, do not over heat)
Bring out trays of chilled pretzels -
Hold each over pot and with a spoon drizzle chocolate over 80% leaving a small area not covered. Put that side back down onto cookie sheet. Continue untill all YUMS are drizzled with milk chocolate and return to icebox.

Step four
While the yums are chilling..
Clean out the pot used and bring out a 2nd pot and make a double boiler for the white chocolate. If you over heat this, you've got white paste.. SLOWLY melt white chocolate chips.. I cant' stress the slowly part.. I've lost a bag or two in my life.. or may 4-5.
Bring out chilled pretzels and drizzle each over pot. Continue until everything has has a good coating and chill once again

step five
Clean dishes, sink, floor counters and everything because it's been splattered or has pecan pieces on it by now. LOL

Step six, pull pretzels and apples out and allow to warm to room temp. I put mine in my unheated ovens. Then you may bag them or wrap in plastic wrap. They may be kept at room temp.

Step seven. ENJOY!!!!

side note. I always make this with hubby or son and hand off the recently dipped or drizzled yum and let them either roll it in nuts or place on a papered tray. The 'chilling' helps the chocolates to firm faster.
