SUPPER CLUB - Sunday, Aug 9th

Post by purrfect-lady » Sun Aug 09, 2020 5:37 am

Good morning,

We are having a cool-ish weekend, which is fine with me. But I did have to wear a jacket last night when we were invited to friends' for a glass of wine out around a campfire to celebrate a birthday. Today is my brother, Albert's 63rd wedding anniversary. He just missed it. I'll give Barb a call. She was only 19 and he was 22 when they eloped to Idaho. I was 7 and I remember when my parents discovered the elopement. When they found he hadn't come home the night before they checked his closet and found his good suit gone. They weren't happy. But it all worked out!

Yesterday I got all my gift jams packed up and ready to give for Christmas. Much of it will be hauled to Texas, and many jars will be going to Colorado when my sister visits next month. The rest is all labeled and put away in our back pantry. I want to make just one more batch of strawberry/habanero. We really liked it but it was more sweet than hot. So I hope to try again, making it a little more spicey this time.

I got the binding on my dizzy daizy and a good start quilting my yo-yo quilt. Don't know if I can get that finished today or not but I'm going to try. I also need to do a bit of laundry and pack the trailer fridge. I'm not taking my machine on this shorty camping trip - just handwork.

JANA - that's quite a story you have to tell about the Teton area! Looks like we both cheated death there! Glad you made it home OK and didn't have to take a side trip to Cuba! I tried skiing once but couldn't stay upright and slid all the way down, taking out a bunch of little kids who were having their first lesson on the bunny tow rope. When I finally came to a stop, I took off my skies, stabbed them into the snow and went into the lodge for a hot cocoa and sat and waited for my crew to find me. That's MY idea of skiing!

TINA - hope your dad's OK. Let us know how he's doing, OK?

CAROL - you really have been busy with your produce and cooking! As to chopping the berries for jam, I personally prefer my jam a bit chunky, though I did use my food processor with my berries the other day. What a great idea for your oranges - freeze the zest and juice. I don't freeze much because I don't have an extra freezer. Hope you find some sugar. I need to buy some more, too.

BECCA - I cook mostly out of my head, too, but I do use my BC cookbook when I need a real recipe. Some of the pages are pretty dirty and worn now. My kids loved their dentist when they were little, too. Of course, that was before they ever had any work done except check-ups! But the hygienist was so sweet. They referred to her as their dentist and the actual dentist was "The boy who helped their dentist".

Well, since we were invited to an impromptu birthday celebration I didn't have to cook last night, so tonite will be the pork chops I already thawed, fried apples, corn on cob, and salad.

Good morning!

Mary - that is quite the stash of jam! Yes, skiing is definitely a spectator sport as far as I am concerned. I tried once more, after my knee surgery. Strapped on the skis, rode the chairlift up, then as I got off, my knees shook so bad, that I unhooked that pairs of skis and rode the tram back down to the lodge. Never again put on skis! I was 19 when I tore up my knee, and some dumb little kid, maybe Ethan's age, yelled, as I was face down in the snow, with my knee mangled, "some old lady fell and broke her leg" - I was not old! LOL!

Dinner - I have some pizza dough, cheese, sauce and leftover meatloaf, so will make a calzone for us. Will add some olives too. Kind of a kitchen sink of what I have in the refrigerator to be used up. When I was a teenager, there was a ice cream shop that had on it's menu - A kitchen Sink. It was made up of several scoops of every flavor of ice cream in the store, all the sauces in the store and covered in whipped cream in a very large bowl. It was big enough to share with about 20 people! It was a fun treat!

Sewing - potholders, bindings, etc. I will quilt some on Ethan's quilt and help him out. So when he comes, it will not be much to finish for him. He is a bit scared of my LA.

Stay Safe!
Hugs,
Jana

That was a good shaker! Same size as what we had here in March. Be ready for aftershocks for the next couple of weeks. Yes, you hear a earthquake a split second before you feel them. A sound you learn very well.

I just found a old (Westways Magazine Nov/Dec 1994) news clipping that talked about a 7.7 earthquake in Charlestown, south Carolina in 1886. So who knew?? California has seismic safety regulations both for structures and for roadways unlike much of the nation that make it safer to survive an earthquake.

Yesterday I made Orange Meringue Cookies. I had a BC recipe for Hot Cocoa Meringue Cookies and changed the flavorings. The Orange came out extremely good! I need to try the Strawberry Jam today. I will let you know tomorrow.

Tonight's dinner will be Teriyaki Chicken and rice. We are really enjoying this recipe and it is fairly quick to cook.

Hi! I know it's morning but wanted to let you all know that Dad goes today for blood work and stuff. Thank you all ❤❤
I used the pastry blender for my first batch if strawberries and they were bigger chunks and kinda floated up to the top of the jars. The next batch I used my food processor and pulsed them a few times and then did everything the same and these stayed throughout the jars. I used the food processor with my peaches too and they are distributed throughout the whole jars too.
We drove 450 miles round trip yesterday, I had to get out every hour to walk around for about 10 minutes but we made it!
I put a roast in the crockpot at 6am and it was ready when we got back home.
Tina

Oh Mary, how many habaneros did you use that your jam wasn't spicy? We used the half cup and it's hot! The second batch I didn't have quite a half of a cup probably closer to a smidge over a quarter cup and it's milder.
