Good morning all! Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you all for the warm welcome to the community...I'm excited to get to know you all and explore this quilting board.
Mary: I enjoyed the versatility a nursing degree offered. I started my nursing career working telemetry and ICU at Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay. Oregon Department of Corrections opened a minimum security facility not far from my home, so I took a per diem position to check that out and then the state offered me a full time position, so I stayed in corrections for 10 years. I worked my way up through management and opened a new facility for women that also housed the intake center. Everyone incarcerated with the state (with the exception of those who received the death penalty who went immediately to death row at the penitentiary) came through our facility for processing and placement in other state prisons. That job wasa 24-7, 365 position and I really missed direct patient care, so I started looking for other opportunities. The non-profit Guided Dogs for the Blind had a site in Boring, Oregon and advertised for an RN. I wondered,"hmmm, what does an RN do at Guide Dogs for the Blind?" Students come to train with their new partners and have health issues. 25% of our students were diabetic and then their is the risk of injury just from blindness. I was able to take my dogs to work with me, which was amazing. I was there for almost 10 years until my husband retired and we moved to La Pine to our retirement home. I wasn't ready to retire yet, so I went into clinic management again, ending my career with St. Charles. So that's my long nursing story!
We do have a beautiful quilt store in La Pine. They had a job opening shortly after I retired and I almost put my application in, but my husband brought me back to my senses when he told me he would miss me when he was traveling if I had to work!
Does anyone here come to the quilt show in Sisters? It's pretty awesome. Our ham radio group supports the show.
Well, turkey is on the Traeger and I better get busy starting the rolls. They are predicting snow this afternoon! Enjoy your holiday.
Mary!
