Jan 17 daily devotion

Psalm 138

Many of the Psalms reflect situations in which it is difficult to praise the Lord. When one is overcome by enemies, experiencing suffering and times of distress, or has rebelled in sin, praise is absent. It is hard to acknowledge the Lord and focus on HIm. Praise is a confession of God's lordship and worthiness to be exalted. It reminds us of His providence, which puts the circumstances of life in perspective and literally becomes the access into his presence. This Psalm begins, as many, with an affirmation and commitment to praise the Lord, but note that it is "before the gods" v1; this is so that no other gods, including man-made ones, will infringe on our worship and devotion. It is also not perfunctory worship but "with all my heart" v1 and in a spirit and attitude of submission, "I will bow down" v2.

We praise God for who He is because of His Character, His holiness, and His exaltation. But we thank Him for what He does in His providence, loving kindness, goodness and power.

Thank you, Izzy. It's a great reminder to me to always praise Him First before I begin my prayers asking Him to hear my needs. It is good to remember to rejoice in all His Grace and Forgiveness.

Thanks Izzy.
Think the key here may be With our whole Heart. That would be truly giving our whole self to praising God for who he is.That includes our Hearts & minds.Praising God brings blessings. Becca

Everything is continually before the Lord. He does indeed know us, individually, by our name. He is always there, waiting, for us to open the door and let Him in our lives. His purpose as stated in scripture, "is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man". He awaits to pour out His blessings upon us that are more numerous than the sands of the earth.
