SUPPER CLUB - Wed, Dec 20th

Post by purrfect-lady » Wed Dec 20, 2017 1:52 am

We are closing in on Christmas! are you ready? I think I'll bake some cookies today. Not sure what yet. I'd like to make Mary Q's mom's cranberry bread, but I don't have that recipe. Unless someone here has it?? Mary will be at work today and probably doesn't take the recipe with her. I guess I'll look on-line for one.

Yesterday was a long day, but it went better than we'd dare hope. My brother and nephew drove about 60 miles to get to our meeting spot where we picked them up and took them into Seattle - another 40 miles or so. Expecting the usual horrendous traffic, we allowed extra time and got there early so waited an hour, but his appointments with two doctors were right on schedule. We were home by 6:45 pm. My nephew, Jeff, went along to give his strong support to his dad. Jeff had the brain tumor in October and then a shunt had to be put in last Thursday for fluid build up in his brain. He wasn't feeling too well and was tired, but nevertheless, was there for his dad. He just couldn't drive. Jeff is 53 and a sweetheart. Al is 81. The doctors will meet with the tumor board of 15 doctors next Tuesday and will make a conference call to Al and Jeff that day or the next with their recommendations. All treatment options are on the table at this moment, but they sounded encouraging. But the long day of tense driving, my brother, his brother, the train wreck, the holidays kept poor Bill awake last night with his mind whirling. So we were up at 0300 this morning. The fur-kids were surprised, but happy to run to their dishes for an early breakfast.

JANA - thank you and your hubby for all the train info. Bill and I found it very interesting. I think they will get the last of the cars removed today and then WSDOT will go in and inspect the overpass and the roadway before they open it to traffic.

LINDA - your QOV quilt is amazing. Bless you for making it for your brother and bless him for his service. Did you get away on your trip to Yosemite? Silly question, I guess, because if you did, you aren't seeing this!

BECCA - glad your DH is improving. You are taking such good care of him. I hope he'll be up and around to enjoy Christmas. Is your whole 'crew' coming or do you plan a smaller gathering?

CHICKIE - you ask a lot of questions about our train wreck! Actually, the speed limit on those tracks was 79mph. They say the train was going 81. But the accident happened on a curve where the speed limit was lowered to 30 mph. The black box in the rear engine was recovered undamaged (the only car that didn't leave the tracks) and preliminary info indicates that no effort was made by engineer to apply breaks but the automated braking system did kick in. Also, there was a trainee in the engine with engineer and there is a possibility that was a distraction. There was talk at first that there may have been an object on the tracks that the train hit but I haven't heard any more about that in recent reports. And there is always the possibility of mechanical failure. I believe they hope to have the last of the 13 derailed cars removed by end of today.

IRISH - Yummmmm.... Cookies! and none are better than Christmas cookies! Sounds like you are a fan! Count me in, too! (except for gingersnaps.) After working for 2 years in a care facility, nothing the residents did was surprising. Looking for Jim when you go to visit, is like a treasure hunt!

BECKY - I'm surprised you have any energy at all after work to make supper. I can hardly manage it and I don't even work! Either you take better vitamins than I do or you are a lot younger!! Or maybe I'm just lazy . . .

Tonite we're off again to have dinner at Pomodoro's, an Italian restaurant in Tacoma, with two other couples. We will pick up one couple on our way and meet the other one there. They are all about 88 yrs old so we get together as often as possible. They are all so fun, youthful, and inspiring to us! Another perk - I don't have to cook. AGAIN!

How's it going in your kitchen?

Good morning! Another gloomy day in paradise! That’s o.k. I have so much to do that except for walking Ava, I won’t be tempted to be outside. We need to do a town run today for our Christmas shopping at the bank, feed for calves, cows, dogs and birds (senior discount day), a few things at the grocery store (I forgot about a dinner we go to on Saturday), drop gifts by Moms… and I am still quilting on my uncle’s quilt. I got maybe ¼ completed yesterday. I definitely won’t be mailing before Christmas as there’s too much cooking, cleaning, prep and partying to do before then. I need to clone myself several times over!

I really must plan better next year!

Oh, Mary—my heart goes out to your brother Al and Jeff and Bill’s brother! I feel for Bill—I’ve been wound up after days like that… hangover feeling the next day!

There is always so much to investigate after an accident like that… so many “what if…” and finger pointing. Those poor families to have holidays disrupted and some forever changed because of it.

Irish—I used to make dozens and dozens of decorated sugar cookies. Every year I hope to do them again… definitely not this year. Of course, the favorite cookie over here is plain ole chocolate chip with nothing added (nuts). Guess I should be grateful, but I really like variety!

I need to snag that cranberry bread recipe, too. I saw it posted. Did she post the toffee? My sister does a toffee, but she won’t share the recipe. Maybe I’ll take some cranberry bread to the New Year’s Eve gathering.

Dinner tonight… it was burgers last night, and there’s one left for DH. I’ll figure out something else for me.

Bon appétit!

Good morning!

Train accident investgation, part two. Michael has been teaching me about the engineer's certifaction to operate. It is very intensive - that the engineer must know that track inside and out - memorized, and can tell anyone how that line is laid out, without being on the line. Michael has driven test trains for BART, where he worked - he said it is a extremely hard training to be certified. He ferls that the accident train's engineer's training on the new line may have been rushed, with that being the first run of revenue. Having someone in the cab was a common practice in days past. The engineer and fireman, worked together, calling signals - what the color aspects were, to each other, to verify as they proceeded down the rails. The FRA and NTSB have so many safety rules on operating, that someone, somewhere, slipped and allowed the training to be skimped. The NTSB is looking into that. This is Michael's last theory on the cause. The rule book, that Michael had to memorize while he worked for BRT, was about 2 inches thick, and he was tested on that book by the PUC, Public Utlilities Commission, which oversaw operations at BART, and if he failed the test, at any time, he could lose is job. That is how tough they are in safety issues.

Mary - I have my Aunt's cranberry nut bread recipe from the 60's and all my kids and ne make it. It is probably the same one.

Chickie - we will be having doggy duty here soin too.

Matt is realizing that their new puppy will be the first night away from mama and even with the RV heater running, that it might be too cold out there. So, he is considering a early present to the family, on Friday when they pick up the puppy. He could have saved a ton of money on presents for Chriistmas, because once that puppy is seen, nothing else would natter! Hence, the early gift idea.

Dinner - I did a meatloaf, so we have leftivers.

Last pairs of pj's to sew this morning and this elf id done, done, and done!

Enjoy!

Good late morning from a very sunny, but still too chilly for me...BUT, we have sun and that is great!

Mary, I can almost smell the aromas coming from your kitchen with that cranberry bread baking...If I hurry, will there be some left for me to taste?
My heart also goes out to Bill and of course you...Right now, so much is happening and praying the results are good ones....I'm still amazed at your nephew with all he's gone through....I think that angel is looking over those men in your life....AND not cooking again, you're going to get out of practice!

Becca, It sounds like, each day, your DH does get stronger, thank goodness...As Mary said, when I go to see Jim, it is like a treasure hunt, with a big treasure at the end....Everyone on the staff make a point to "take care" of him, even the maintenance guy...(I think this is the part his brother doesn't see, among other things, lol) What kind of cookies are you baking today? Maybe I'll stop at your house on my way to Mary's......

Chickie, nothing wrong with chocolate chip cookies, everyone loves them...In our family, our Jackie makes them, tells us she doesn't do anything special but they are the best we've ever had...When I think of how many cookies I used to make and then now, here I am cutting the recipe in half...But, I have kids next door who do look for any extras, lol....One year, I thought I'd be smart and stored them in the laundry room...Well, the boys took a liking to spending a lot of time down there and come Christmas, the cookie supply had dwindled...Those boys could sniff out cookies like no other...Hope you are able to stay inside and accomplish what you want to...Just don't send your "dreary weather" this way, lol.....

Jana, reading about all the safety stuff is very interesting...Hate to see any accidents and am amazed that they usually can pin point the cause...Would love to do a cross country train ride....

The carpets are all scrubbed and things are looking pretty good around here, finally, lol...This morning I decided to work on the kitchen cabinets and have the bottoms done, looking like new...On to the tops...I will be leaving later to visit with Jim and then onto PetSmart to "visit" with the cats/kittens....Anxious to see how many of my tuxedos are left...I believe, Sat. the foster parents will be taking the fur kids home until after the holidays so the babies will have a good break....Gee, just like in college, lol....My boys will be coming either tomorrow of Friday, Stephan will be going back home and his lady love the day after Christmas but Nick doesn't have to be back at school until the 18th of Jan...Terry has gotten him an interview for an internship at his company....

As far as dinner, if Mary's not cooking, I'm not either.....You know, there's always cereal......

You all have a great day...........

Happy eating............

Good afternoon ladies. Sounds like Christmas baking is in the air!
I copied Mary Q's bread recipe also, sounds wonderful, and I happen to have all the ingredients too. Miriam, would you like to share your recipe for the frosting for the sugar cookies? My cookies are pretty good, but my frosting just isn't like my Grandma's. Wish I would have paid closer attention way back then. I do make a mean Chicken and noodles dish that I learned from her. Loved to help make those. And Zuchinni bread.
Tonight, I just don't know, maybe the sloppy joes from last night, since I forgot we needed to be at the middle school at 6:30. LOL...it was fast quesadeas for the baby brats. They like that stuff.
Mary, I try to make a decent meal when I get home, otherwise, they are snacking all night, and making messes, like they did when we got home last night!
Hope all have a wonderful holiday, if I don't get back, sure have a lot to do yet. Warm wishes for all, and prayers to those in need.
Becky

Good morning everyone:

We have rain!! Also cold! Also wind! A real winter day.

Yesterday was baking day. I have made a pumpkin roll with cream cheese filling for neighbors and family for the last 40 years and they all come to expect it. I make 3 at a time and it is a 3 hour balance of cooking, cooling and filling the 3. At the end there are confectioners sugar, pecans and pumpkin mix everywhere, plus lots of dishes. But the results are worth it.

Today I woke up with my left shoulder really sore and limited range and use of it (I am left handed). Some ibuprofen and Voltaren gel are helping, but it was a struggle to put on the bra this morning. Good excuse to not do any cleaning today.

MaryZ - we leave for Yosemite on Friday and come home Monday. Yosemite is only 3 1/2 hours away, we pass right by Chriss's house. With this rain we are hoping for a winter wonderland there. It has been beautiful in the past.

Am binding the last of the 3 quilts I sent out for quilting. This one won't make it to the new owner for Christmas, but that is OK. I have never told her I was making it. Surprises are good at any time. I also pulled out the material I had bought to make my God Daughter's quilt that I bought some time ago. Good thing, as it is another complicated one so I need to allow myself time to finish it. She graduates in 1 1/2 years. It is hummingbirds and morning glories. I have made a quilt for each of her siblings as they go off to college. She will be the 6th (out of 10)to go.

Best wishes for a very Merry Christmas to you all, and hope everyone is with family. Hugs all around. Check in with you after Christmas.

**Linda
