Psalm 60
When we are going through troubled times and difficulties, there is a natural tendency to feel that God has rejected us. We easily succumb to the subtle temptation that was common to Jewish Perceptions that when things go well it is because we are good and God is blessing us, and when things go wrong, it is because we have failed and God is punishing us. This "cause and effect" philosophy, however, is contrary to God's nature and purpose in our lives. He doesn't guarantee the absence of hardship and, in fact, often allows it because of a greater good He has in mind.
God wants to remind us that we will not overcome and win the victory in our own strength or by our own means. We must look for Him to lead the way and give us help when we encounter the adversary, whether personally or as the people of God. He will not allow us to experience deliverance by our own hand, lest in our pride we take the glory that is due only Him. But when we come to Him, acknowledge His power and sovereignty, and rest in Him He will give us courage and valor to face the enemy and our trials, and He will "tread down our adversaries".
