Psalm 51:1-9
Conviction, Confession, and Cleansing
This penitent Psalm of David reveals how we should respond when we become aware of having sinned. It is a response of conviction, confession, and cleansing.
Fortunately for us, the Holy Spirit has been given to live within us, and one of His roles is to convict us of sin and unrighteousness. He guides us in that which would please and honor God and reveals to us when we go astray and are out of God's will.
When David was confronted by his sin, the conviction he felt was not just guilt because of what he had done; if affected his relationship with God so he readily confessed his sin. In confession, he acknowledged his need for God's mercy.
The beautiful conclusion of coming under conviction and confessing our sin is the assurance of cleansing. God does not keep holding our failure over our head and putting us on a guilt trip. When God's Spirit convicts us of sin, it is in order to lead us to repentance and confession, which results in forgiveness, cleansing and restoration--a joyous experience.
Our dependence must be on Him, and our desire must be for His holiness.
