Post by grammiequilts » Sun Jul 27, 2025 5:14 am

Good morning it is humid and another warm day here,,,we will be in the high80s and 90s here,,,I dont rememeber days like this in a row. it has been hot here for the whole summer so far. I am now starting to crave cooler weather and sweaters,,,and quilts.
Had a great family dinner yesterday it was fun to see everyone ( my only brother couldnt come) but many nieces and nephews and all of my sisters, Mexican food was good ( except for the heartburn I had last night)
Today I will do a little clean up and try again to get the top done on the America quilt. I have one row and the border to put on. Might get it into the quilting que this week.
Supper today will be a salad with left over fried chicken I will put in the air fryer, Unless someone has other ideas...
Hope you all have a great day, XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Good morning,

JUDI - funny how we all wish for the warm, sunny days of summer but are so ready for the cooler fall days when they arrive. We will soon start feeling a change in the air here. We will be about 76 today and for the next 10 days = 77 to 83. Can't ask for better than that. Your dinner last night sounds amazing! I'm sorry your brother wasn't able to join you. I hope to hear at the end of the day that your quilt top is in the QQ! I'm still watching CW videos. I had no idea there were so many variations of this pattern. I remember Carole V spent years working on her CW. I know she finished it. I should write to her and ask which method she used and what size she made her "windows".

LYN - congrats on your big catch! I'm sure you enjoyed your supper last night! Also, thank you for the Texas Poppy info. I would like to make some, though not sure I'll get to them right away.

FLO - happiness, aka your roof, is covering you now! Odd they are waiting a week to finish the job, but perhaps others are also anxious for their roof, too, and they will go around and finish up the gutters later. . .
CHRISS - what is on your calendar for today? Have you done any sewing lately? My sewing room is the one place I can go to kind of escape from everything else in life. It soothes me. Usually.

MARY Q - I mislaid my knee lifter once. I actually have two since I have two Bernies and all my parts, pieces, and feet are enterchangable so I did have one to use. But for about 3 years I looked everywhere I could think of. Then one day I was rooting through the deepest depths of my Bernina Carrying Case and there it was!! I just hadn't looked deep enough. So, I suggest you look there - your carrying case, not mine.

JANA - how did Mr. G enjoy his ATV ride yesterday? I miss our RZR but Washington isn't so ATV friendly as Utah. So as ours was aging out, we finally sold it to a young man who I know was thrilled to have it. We figure if we want to ride again we can always come to UT and rent one. How is that OWL coming along? Did you get your Kimberbell patterns yet? And weren't you making a train quilt for Mr. G's birthday? How did that turn out.

LOIS - Do you have everything gathered up for the mancation now? How long will they be gone? In other words, how long will YOUR vacation be??

VAL - how is your tooth feeling today?

Yesterday Bob was gone to his "sidecar rally". Any brand motorcycle with sidecars. He had a great time and was home again by 3pm when he and Bea crashed for 1-1/2 hours. Our kids were gone all day yesterday, too. So I got my ABC quilt nearly all quilted. And I'm here to tell you this quilt's reputation for being a challenge is still intact and strengthening! I could have finished it yesterday except for all the problems I had - This was a learner quilt for sure. If I were doing it again, you can be certain I would do things differently. Bill and I also worked on our scrapbook for Amara. So far we've got front and back covers plus 5 pages finished. About 15 more pages to go.

Today's plan. Bob is going home to Portland but first he wants to make us all omelets. With our ingredients. Yay to that! He'll do them on Bill's new Blackstone grill/griddle thing. Then he'll load up his bike into his cargo trailer and head home. I plan to finish the ABC quilt, maybe bind it (binding is made), and we'll work on the scrapbook some more. I have also started to cut out my QOV quilt, but only enough so I can make my first block to see how it's going to go. I cannot make any mistakes in cutting because I have just enough of the dark blue fabric. NO extra. This was supposed to be a Texas Winter project, but it might just get done before we go. I'm still waiting on my KT Vintage Christmas kit. They've said they hope to able to ship it by end of July. The hold up was the pattern - Moda didn't print enough I guess so it was back ordered.

Supper tonite? I don't know. I'm kind of tired of cooking and eating, too! And doing dishes. Two DW loads a day. I think in the last couple weeks we've seen and fed everyone we know - most of them twice! lol! But we've loved it all. L&L will be leaving again later this week, I think, so we'll be back to just the two of us.

Have a super Sunday!

Maryz, crew for shingles different from crew for finishing. But I'm ok with this wait.
Extreme heat here. Not sure what today will bring.

Good morning!

Again were smoke covered. It's thick enough that you think a new fire nearby has started, but hasn't. The fire the other morning was a house fire just barely up the canyon and fire jumped quickly with a bunch of equipment and knocked it down in a hurry. We were lucky. Not so much for a apartment complex across the valley. That fire, caused by a lawnmower in very dry weeds, causing a spark, which turned into a inferno, destroyed 2 large complexes of 24 units, down to absolutely nothing left. Sad. Good, everyone got out safely.

Spent the morning smelling cotton fumes. That was good! Didn't buy anything, but Sarah found what she wanted for a gift to her friend. Then we came home and she raided my stash for the pattern , trims and my fusible fleece. That is getting low and since JoAnn's is no more, hope Amazon carries it. We have just one local owned fabric store that isn't a LQS. They have a bit of everything.

OWL is a putter along project. I need to fuse the fabrics and get the leftover pieces tamed and back in a box! They've taken over the Batt Cave! My Kimberbell orders are not arriving for another couple of months, they were a pre-order special price. I really don't like pre-order, but that seems to be the new way of doing things. It's that way in the train hobby too.. But sometimes Mr G has to wait a year or more for a engine! And between here and California, he has only one actual hobby shop, here in Provo. And they are very small. Glad I have a few more shops!

He and Matt had fun. They started not too far from here, a town named Goshen. Then followed a old old abandoned railroad right of way. Now, many of you have watched the series m The Chosen, well, Goshen is where it's filmed. The church has a full replica of Jerusalem buildings and they film the outdoor scenes there as well. Very sparsely populated and about a hour from my house. Definitely the boonies! So the mountains in the background you see are the Rockies and mainly the big mountain is Mt Nebo. Very similar to the scenery in Israel. We even have a fresh water lake that has a river that drains to a salty lake. Israel, it's the Sea of Galilee, down the Jordan River to the Dead Sea. Here it's Utah lake, down the Jordan River to the Great Salt Lake. And we're a desert too!

Church is a bit later. We're singing more of our pioneer hymns. I love the pioneers - they rock! Loading what they felt were the very precious things they owned into a wagon and headed west, not knowing where they were headed, but trusted their all, to God, and he directed their path. And they persevered and gave us this great heritage!

Well, time to get going,

Hugs,
Jana

Good morning Girls

Definitely not going anywhere outside today! 92* again! No worries tho, I have fabric and food--what else does a gal need.

Judi... Must be ESP as I was thinking the same thing earlier this morning--I'm just about ready for cool temps and to wear sweat pants and sweaters again. Tho NOT ready for icy cold and snow! I'm just anxious to open windows again--and what the heck--maybe wash a few outside windows! What fun to have an evening with siblings and kids!!

Maryz.... You know that feeling--when you KNOW you have some a missing object somewhere but you just can't remember which dumb spot you saw it? That's my knee lifter! Actually at one time I thought it was a knee thingee to run the machine! Which is probably why I put it some where far away. I was kind of wondering how you were going to quilt Amara's clothes with all the ruffles and do-dads etc. Have you found out if they want you to come back to the library for a quilting class again?

Flo... I often check the weather in Oak Grove, where my BFF lives--figuring you are pretty about the same. I always feel so bad for the roofing guys on days like this and have lots of water handy for them!!

Jana... OMG-- two apartment buildings destroyed!!! Those poor folks!! With super dry weather any little thing can start a spark! Good news that everybody made it out okay! Lives forever changed!

Chriss... Makes me smile that you ask Richard that same question every year! What a great tradition--especially since isn't he a teacher now? A positive attitude can make all the difference in the world--as I have learned as well. And I believe as you--God watches over me 24/7--even if crap falls into my life--I somehow am able to turn it around into a good thing. I thank God every night! Normally I would recommend independently owned pharmacies, but there aren't too many of those left. Almost none in Minnesota anyway! Remind me again, what's on your schedule for tomorrow! It's marked on my calendar.

Lois.... Thanks for sharing the info on the Poppy Blocks.. Not sure who discovered the program first--You or Lyn. But I found some fabric in the garage yesterday--some I've had for YEARS and these blocks are a perfect way to make use of it! They do sew up pretty fast!!

Lyn.... Lemon juice or tartar sauce on your walleye? I'm not much into tartar sauce--but I really do love malt vinegar!!! Lemon juice is what I usually have in the house. In Ireland almost every restaurant has vinegar on the table!

A few dishes to wash this morning, but the house is clean---still messy--but clean--there IS a difference you know. Think I'll stitch up some of the poppy blocks this morning while I wait for zippers to arrive. I'm starting to get a little burned out making pencil cases, but would like to do about another 25 or so. A box I shipped home from AK arrived yesterday--forget what was in it!! A little fabric and a couple books I found at the thrift store---and the bar of shampoo I bought to try!

Hope you all keep cool today--remember to hydrate!

Good morning. It's going to be another great day today.

I have three not too wide but tall windows in my living room with accordion blinds. one of the stinkin' blinds won't go up and down anymore. dang it! Thankfully Jerry left enough measuring tapes so I can measure it and get a new one. These accordion blinds are nice but I am wondering if the old fashioned mini blinds aren't a better choice. The accordion blinds are more expensive and wear out over time. The sun isn't kind to them.

My mind is racing with kitchen ideas. I'm going to wait until after my cardio appointment before getting started. Don't want a remodel going on in the middle of surgery. But I am thinking colors. I've picked out the laminate counters. And the sink will be here soon. I need to think paint. What color should the walls and cupboards be? https://www.wilsonart.com/italian-white-di-pesco-4954 My appliances are black and stainless steel, brushed nickel are my faucet and ceiling fan.

Lyn, glad you got some keepers. I bet they tasted good. I loved fresh fish, grandma would dredge trout in corn meal and fry them whole, minus the guts. I miss fresh fish. We can get unfrozen fish in the grocery store but it's just not the same.

Judi, glad you had a fun time at dinner. I bet the laughter was abundant. I think I would take that leftover fried chicken and chunk it up and put it in a green salad with lots of stuff in the salad. black beans, olives, bell peppers in all colors, tomato, onion and cucumbers. And anything else that struck my fancy. I like having my fancy struck. Wonder where that saying came from?

Maryz, listen, do you hear that? it's awfully quiet at your house and is going to get quieter. Glad it's been a fun few days, even if you did have to cook. I vote for ordering a pizza, or sandwiches for dinner. My mind has been a bit focused on other things so I haven't been in the sewing room. My mind has been thinking about my recovery and what I need to do to prepare for it. premade freezer meals, paper plates, a good house cleaning and stuff like that.

Jana, that's a good lesson, trust in God and He will guide you on your path. He supplies our needs and some of our wants. It's a good life. I have watched the chosen. When a new season comes out I binge watch it from the first season through the end. I'd like to see Goshen. If I had to wait a year for an engine I'd be Mr. Grumpy too. Imagine having all your cars in a row and nothing to pull them with.

Maryq, I do often think about hydration. I have some pedlite packets that go in a bottle of water for just in case. Richard is a teacher, and he indulges his mom each year, and throughout the year as well. Like you I have pretty good kids. Tomorrow is only a dental cleaning for me. Tuesday I take my stepmom to get her hair done, and Thursday I go see my grandson, where his neck will be full of lip prints, and maybe his cheeks too.

The main thing I need to accomplish is to make a "what to do" list for the kids and put it with my will, just in case. I don't plan on dying but it is a possible side effect of open heart surgery. My cardiologist seems to think that is the way it will go, but the surgeon makes the final decision.

Funny, I've been thinking about healthier eating and prepping healthier meals. Beef isn't as popular in healthy eating as I had hoped. So I dreamt last night that we were all at Lyn's house and she was grilling burgers but I had to make oatmeal. I was helping with the dishes when I woke up.

I'm off to unload my dish rack and do a little vacuuming. I have two bathtubs in this house. Each seems to be a holding basin for dust and dog hair. I need to take the shop vac to the tubs that I never ever use. I think I will also do a load of laundry. and I'd really like to do those kitchen floors again. I'm sure I will find other things to do. But first I have to get dressed and have some breakfast. Not oatmeal.

You all have a blessed day

Nice day but stormy later they predict.

Chriss, Thanks for helping with the dishes. I would not let you eat oatmeal at my house. You can have a burger, if you want I will make them out of ground turkey. Truth is, I rarely cook burgers.

MaryQ, No tartar sauce, no lemon. I cook up some wild rice. I melt a couple Tbsp of butter and add chives. On a long sheet of aluminum foil I place the walleye filets in the middle, drizzle the butter/chives over, salt and pepper. Then I add a layer of wild rice on top and a little salt and pepper. Fold over the foil to seal, put it on the grill, 350°, for about 15 minutes. Yummy 😋 It's healthier than deep fried.

As for the Poppy Texas drive, Lois gets the credit, as she found out and said she's made some. I just hunted up the info. I watched a video of the owner of the shop and she noted that yardage for the big sqs was better than fats. I need to hunt in the closet and see if I have something available.

Today will probably be a sewing day and a load or 2 of laundry.

May y'all have a Blest day.
Lyn

Good afternoon everyone, Baby quilt is done, I will post a pic under pictures. Now to focus on DGS and our high school friend. DGS BD is in December and Christmas is so hoping I can get them done by then. Will drop the baby quilt off at long armer tomorrow.

Lyn I looked up the Walleye fish. It sorta reminds me of a Stripped Bass here. We rarely have burgers here either. Usually when we are camping. DH does our cooking and he cooks the fish a variety of ways. Never fried though unless once again we are camping.

Chriss the accordian blinds in my sewing room went to you know where in a hand basket and also need to be replaced. I am not sure what I will eventually put there. They are closed and will stay that way to avoid sun light damaging anything. Uhm, there is a lot of white in that laminate so not so sure I would go with white. Might look a bit sterile. Maybe a very light Grey, Now I will have to go look at paint cards! You are so right, a what to do list is essential but likely won't be needed. Open heart, shoot I was hoping for the other. You are going to need help at home. Many restrictions with post surgery care.

Maryq I actually turned the AC on today. It's not that hot but house felt too warm so on she went. I have apparently missplace some fabric. I was sure I bought the blue for the last block of my AP & Q quilt but can't find it anywhere. Now I wonder if I dreamt that. I have very clear memories of seeing it in a bag but .......No fabric. Yes my house is always messy and mostly clean. I need to get to the carpets and floors before I go to shop tomorrow.

Jana wow that is awful. Glad though that everyone got out. It's hard to imagine how little the pioneers survived with.

Maryz the tooth is pretty okay for now. No more appointments until Aug 6. I always thought having a side car would be cool.

Flo progress is always good.

Judi you are apparently getting our N. CA heat. It wasa been a really cool summer so far. We are hearing though the Indian Summer is likely coming and Sept and Oct are likely to make up for it. I have no dinner ideas, DH job at my house. I don't cook like his mother so he has to cook. He rarely complains about that anymore.

Need to put the back together this evening for the baby quilt. MAD Monday tomorrow and the Open Sew Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I will focus on friends quilt at the shop and DH at home. For now, off to find some IBU for these old knees of mine.

Have a good evening everyone.
A Friend is God's way of making sure we never walk alone!

Chris when you see the cardiologist be sure to bring along a list of questions, written down. Ask about alternatives and other forms of repair. Also ask about second opinions before anything is scheduled. You need to be absolutely sure this is what you need,,,and dont worry about offending the dr, they are glad that you are taking an active role in your health care and not going passively by what ever they say. Also.....the phrase "Strikes your fancy" originated years ago no explanation of by whom. It means what ever makes you happy.xxxooo

Chriss -

I learned a easy? method for designing a room. Find a fabric or a picture that you absolutely love! I usually use a fabric. Now use that very favorite fabric for your colors. Take your cues , using a main, and 9ne or two accent co,or. Now this fabric doesn't need to be used in the room, ie pillows, curtains, etc, it just a way to narrow your choices. Here, I have a favorite fabric I use, to blend the colors from room to room. So there's a feeling of a cohesive flow. But each room is its own room. And not a hodge podge. I take this fabric with me to the paint store, 5heblind store, the quilt shop, everywhere! In a gallon zip lock. Then I gather paint chips that go with it and bring them home and audition the chips in the light of the room. Counter top samples too. Add a scrap of your flooring too. Drag this bag with everywhere! And a notepad and marker to label where you found the sample.

This worked for me in the redo of my house in Concord and everything thing in the house here in Herriman. It doesn't need to be done in a day, it's a process and don't commit until you are absolutely positively happy will all!

Jana
