Need advice- - -Please and Thank you

I am working on a disappearing nine patch. I am getting close to finishing with it (helps to be retired). My question is this......I have decided that I want to put on 3 boarders. A 3" piece, then a 6" piece and finally another 3" piece. I read that the sides always go on first and that I was to fold the quilt top and measure the middle and that was the measurement of the 1st boarder (something about squaring up the quilt---which I did). Is there any reason why I have to sew each boarder on individually or can I sew 2 of the boarders together then sew to the quilt top?? Is there a well followed rule on this??
Looking for advice so that I don't do something and then have to rip it all out.






I wanted to thank everyone for their input, was very helpful. In the end I decided that since I am so new to this that maybe I should not get overly confident and just do one at a time. that seems to be working out just fine. think I will stay with this technique and not try to rush things along.

Good morning!

Once that you know both sides of the quilt - you can sew on the borders - just cut both of those borders the same length.

I do my sides first - then the top and the bottom border - as for the quilt "police" lol - I don't think that there is a hard and fast rule that it has to be that way. To me - it just looks more finished.

Remember that the top and bottom borders will be cut longer because you added to the sides of the quilt. I was using up a scrap that I had last night and forgot that part! I had just enough to make the sides the right length, but was short for the additional amount for the top and bottom borders - so I "punted" and added a cornerstone in each corner of the quilt - worked out fine.

Roger, I think, unless you plan to miter all 3 borders, you need to add each border, one at a time. I usually do the sides first, then the top & bottom. Then I would do the sides of the second border, top & bottom. Ditto the third. Unless you like the look you will get from sewing the three side borders together, sewing them onto the quilt then doing the top/bottoms. Lay out your fabric with your quilt top and study different looks.

If you like the mitered look, you could sew all the borders together first but make sure they are all long enough for the entire finished quilt, plus a bit extra for the mitering. Again, lay it all out and stand back and look. If you can't decide, take a photo and look at it that way. That really can change perspective.

As for quilting rules - The only rule I follow is to please myself!

And I'd like to say - it's so nice to see a man quilting!! My husband doesn't piece quilts, but he does all our long-arming. and even has a few clients. I think we have a few other husbands (we call them DH's as in Darling/Dear Husband) I think that dabble in our art.

Great advice!! I am one for mitering borders as I hate to sew on one at at time. If I don't have the fabric to miter them then I have even been known to still sew them all together ... just not all the way to the ends. Sew them on to the quilt and then finish the ends as if I had sewn them one a time.

Roger - welcome to the forum. You've had some great advice here. I'm probably too late with this but I'll put in my 2 cents anyway. I'd miter the corners or put in cornerstones. The more borders you add on one at a time the more likely you will be to have wavy borders.

So, tell me, how did you do them?
