You all we really wonderful to send me suggestions and I am going to give each and everyone a try. I have two other quilters in the family but they live 900 miles away. When I started quilting I was not sure that I wanted to go buy perfectly good material and then abuse it, so I called both of them and made the mistake of asking..."would you happen to have any scraps?" both of them yelled "yahoo" and I was not sure what that meant till boxes started to be delivered, and I do mean boxes. That was a huge help to me, similarly was your responses. Both gifts, theirs and yours, give me hope.
p.s.---the idea that you end up with that kind of collection of scraps is somewhat concerning, especially in a small home.

haha, Notrub! Sounds like you're going to be making a scrappy quilt! Remember my favorite saying for a label: "Better finished than perfect!" and by the way, after 20 yrs of quilting, I'm STILL frogging (rip it, rip it, rip it) more frequently than I'd like to admit.

Scrap quilts are some of my favorites! You will have great fun working with the scraps and making beautiful quilts! I am happy for you!

I don't know how big your house is. But, mine is less then 1,000 sq feet. I had stuff shoved everywhere. We ended up buying one of those sheds that looks like a cottage. We put it in the backyard. We ran electric, heat and it has a small window AC unit. So now I can just up and leave everything where it is sitting. You will figure out as you go along what will work for you. The most important thing is to enjoy it.

Where there is a will, there is a way. You will figure out the best way to store and maintain your stash no matter what size your home is. There are some on here that live in their travel trailers/motor homes and still find a way to do their quilting. It's all going to work out.

so? what will your first project be? my suggestion is to start out small and with an easy pattern and go from there..too big can be overwhelming.

Scrappy quilts are my favorite. Definitely go for smaller projects first--table runners, doll quilts, wall hangings, baby quilts and sofa throws before tackling full, queen or king quilts. It's so satisfying to have a small project completed rather than being bogged down by a huge project. Your quilting mentors will be thrilled with a table runner from their scraps! I'm sure your family is delighted to welcome you to their quilting fold and send you their scraps. You can always "press" fabrics between the mattress and box springs, under sofa cushions, under towels in a linen closet... Ask "Purrfect-Lady" for some of her creative mobile home storage ideas... Have fun!!!

I agree with Chriss my first project was a queen quilt double irish chain that is all hand pieced, hand quilted and cut from a cardboard template. YEAH in the day LOL Now its stripping and rotary cutter and gotta love the machine

) I still love to hand quilt and prefer it. Misouri Star Quilts has nice eash tutorials you can try to start off.

Hole in the wall and Piece of cake patterns by El are super easy and you can do a lap in a day really:))

Notrub.All those scraps come in handy.Scrappy is my favorite.I too would advise not beginning on a big quilt.Do small projects first.Happy sewing....Becca
