Florida weather and birds in my backyard

Post by LynnS » Tue Dec 11, 2007 2:12 am

We've seen the ice and snow, now let's warm up! It was 76F yesterday and will be like this the rest of the week. It's funny but the stores still stock up on winter coats here, and scarves, etc. You only need them maybe two months of the year, and only if you're going out very early or late in the day.

The gray birds are sandhill cranes. They are almost always in pairs. They sound like I think a prehistoric bord would sound. They have a very loud, warbling "honk". The one in the picture is going after a nest of fire ants. I thought I had killed that pile but now I'll have to go check it again.

The white bird is an egret of course. They always seem to be alone. There's also a large, black diving bird that swims like a duck, but with only it's head and neck sticking out of the water. Then it sits on the bank with wings held out to dry off in the sun.

Looks so nice there. It's cold and wet here, supposed to be like this all week. Yuck. I want to come sit in your yard!

WOW...what a great view. Those birds are beautiful.

I couldn't help notice the screened in patios or pools or whatever across the way. Is that a common thing in Florida? We are planning to rent a house near Disney World and they all have screened in pools. Could sure use one of those here in SD, but I'm afraid the wind would blow it away.

Lynn, I love seeing the birds!! I have been following the migration of the Whooping Cranes, led from Wisconsin to FL by ultralite planes. They are in my county in TN right now, but they keep the area a secret. Your area looks very much like my daughter's - she's in Vero Beach - where are you??
