This is a tote and tool caddy that I made for my guild meeting when we are sewing...I modified the pattern for the tool caddy to my needs as to what tools and notions that I would be carrying. It just folds up and ties. I didn't have a pattern, except for the center block, for the tote, I just made sure it was large enough to carry my cutting mat and a few other things...

Can you give us any hints on how to make them. They would make great gifts.

Okay, I got the tool caddy pattern from Carol Doak's website. It is a very simple paper pieced pattern, but you could use any block that you wanted. The pattern didn't call for any type of batting or anything but I did add that to give it some shape. The other modifications that I did was, I moved the tie strings to the end, I added a large single pocket behind the tools for my 12inch ruler, and as far as the tools, I layed the tools that I would be carrying down on the fabric and drew a line around them to sew on to make little pockets for them to fit in.

As far as the tote goes...I didn't use a pattern for it. I did use the star, so that it would match my caddy. I added borders to the blocl until it was the size that I needed and cut out the lining, batting, and backing, pinned together and sewed around 3 sides. I think it is 17x22. I added handles, I just hung it over my shoulders to find the length that I needed. That's about it...Hope this helps...
