Sue, there is no secret to the binding. I just had to practice til I got it right,and it wasn't all that easy. Just takes perserverance...

I agree with Caroline1947, just keep at it. I watched a video of Elenor doing the binding and it helped alot. It's on this website. But, keep trying. I used to used pre-packaged binding and the members here helped me with making my own. So, keep trying.

Corners were MY bugaboo, too. (I suspect they are everybodys'! lol!) And I'd scrutinized Eleanor's method as illustrated in many of her books and watched her on TV. Then about 6 months ago, I watched her video on this site and I realized I was forgetting an important step - the 1/4" of backstitching at the corners. Well, once I started doing this, things got better. They're not perfect yet. Some corners would defy even El! But I'm way better than I was a year ago! I just keep practicing. Make several 12" blocks and practice binding them as little quilts. It's great practice and you can give them away as "candle mats" for Christmas or use them as hostess gifts, etc. (especially if you include a candle from the $1 store!)

I am starting to practice this morning. I have a ton of 12" squares that don't match anything else. What a wonderful idea to make Candle Mats out of them for Christmas. Also lets me use what I have made and practice at the same time.

I have been following all the directions for ages, and I would get three really nice ones and one that would defy all coaxing from me. I did Eleanor's First Love pattern in fall colors for our retreat in Sept. and low and behold, I got FOUR good corners. I have no idea what I did different. I do suspect it has to do with the "width" of my binding, so I'm going to experiment a little. While you are playing with those blocks, try adjusting the width and see what happens.

I use the glue binding method from Sharon Schambler videos it works like a charm the glue washes out and perfect corners....

I dont have trouble with square corners,,,she was asking about the odd angled ones!! They are tricky!!

If practice makes perfect I would be teaching binding .... but, NO. I think I will find the video you guys are talking about and watch it ... The practice is there, it must be the method that is wrong .... I can do corners just fine ... but I cannot get the backside to be even .... there is often uneven amounts of material beyond the stitches ... hard to explain ....
I'll go look for the video.

Yes, I have seen this before ... I do my binding this way, but the backside is never even ..... is anyone's ? Maybe I am expecting something that is impossible ...

I found I can't easily fold to the back if I make the strips 2 1/2 inches. So I cut them 2 3/4 inches and it's easier. I usually have one hard corner too. Now, I cut the corners of the quilt sandwich so that I don't have to fold the binding around a point. I just flatten it a little by cutting off the very tip. It folds better and the binding still feels full.
