Hmmm.

What a good question. You've rec'd a lot of great ideas and block suggestions.

I have to second Redsaltbox - a basket would be nice with either of the 2 fabric to the left of the picture. Is applique out totally? Or just applique with a stabilizer is out?

If you don't want to applique flowers have you thought of fabric folding? It's like origami with fabric and then you add the petals and flowers. You might be able to use the greenish fabric with the white polka dots as flowers.

Check out this website http://www.origami-resource-center.com/ ... lding.html It has a direct link to a great book by Rebecca Wat.

If this is a judged event I would suggest going for something a bit more unique than what you think others would contribute. OR, if this is judged more on hand-quilting technique than the actual 'theme' of the quilt perhaps a Rail Fence or star block would showcase how even and straight your stitches are?

If WeSig is correct that these are 1800s I suggest you look into patterns that originated at that time and make up a sampler from that era.

Good luck and keep us posted,
dawne

I do like the basket idea. The left hand one for the basket, the next one for the background, and the other two for the flowers done in squares and/or half square triangles, or the pink as appliqued flowers. There are many basket patterns. Maybe do a sampler of blocks. The right hand fabric can be used to blend from the pink to the background. What size does it need to be? Or is it just one block?

Use buttons or yo-yos for flower centers.
