HeyGirl---

We lost 3 of our 4 hives over the winter. It was a very harsh winter here. There was a Sunday I remember I think it was January where the high that day was "3" UGH!

So, we have 2 more for a total of 3. I'm hoping we get some calls to catch a few swarms. That would be good.

Colony colapse is a real issue. The great minds are wondering....

Good luck with your buzzing babies this year!!

Caren!!! Good job with the bees. My guys have 9 hives. Son's horse got in and destroyed one of the bigger hives-on some of the coldest days last winter- What do you use on the mites?? Son prefers the powdered sugar-not the chemicals.
One free piece of advice--don't spill a 5 gallon bucket of honey on a heated cement floor--it's not fun to clean up--the dustpan worked the best!!

Are they Weaver bees?????

KHO--Dh doesn't use chemicals on the farm at all. He's done a couple of things for the mites. He's used a drone comb & a bottom screen. Hasn't noticed much difference.

Good advice on the not spilling a 5 gal bucket! Oh my! What a mess that would have been! LOL

I just saw a program on tv today about the bees. Basically I learned that those that use chemicals are loosing their hives and those that only do 'organic' have lost no hives.
I'm not sure how the organic bee people do it. I think it would be interesting to research.

Can you heat their hives in the winter so they don't freeze?

You are a busy woman...enjoyed the sequence of photos with explanations. Had neighbors with bee hives years ago, and enjoyed the delicious local honey they produced.

Thanks for sharing the pictures again. It is so educational. My DH and I both enjoyed seeing how bee keeping begins. You are doing a great job with those bees!!

My grandpa had some bee hives when I was very young. I think he was finished beekeeping by the time I was 6 or 7 so I only remember bits and pieces. I've thought about keeping bees, but we live in a neighborhood with houses all around us and I think that people would be more worried about getting stung than having nice gardens and flowers. Plus, I'm not sure how my dogs would like the bees.

Thank you for posting the pictures! They were very interesting and I look forward to seeing pictures of you all harvesting the honey.
