The big thread spool in the front is actually a 'pirn', it is a bobbin used on a end delivery weaving shuttle. These are often found in industrial weaving factories, but lots of home weavers use them also.

That's very cool. Very cool that he made you a dulcimer as well. I'd love to see that :)
