Everybody interested in making the pencil-cases look here:
www.studiokatdesigns.com/freepatterns.htm
- look for the "rolly-nester" pattern - there is a tutorial with detailed instructions. I was quite lucky to have come across this pattern - this technique of putting in the zipper in very elegant and not difficult! Just trust the instruction steps. You do not need to neaten the inside seams with bias stripes if you do not like - just zigzag the seams densely, you even do not have to cut the corners off ... Good luck and enjoy!

Inka, I just came back to take a closer look at these--looks like you made two different sizes here. I just found some fat quarters that would make my granddaughters happy with some pencil cases for school....thanks for the link. I printed off the directions and am anxious to get started. I won't be making the quilt block patterns, but just a kids print. Really, really cute...thanks for the inspiration.

Re: Pencil Cases Inka made for school
A few suggestions: try those sizes suggested in the instructions (the middle one is still quite small). My favourite size of the block I make (printed fabric panel I cut and quilt) is approx. 8" x 10"(11"). Do not make the mistake I had made - attach the zipper on the LONGER side of the panel. When making the sandwich, follow this order:
quilted front panel facing you + zipper back facing you (the longer the zipper the better - it must overlap the panel at both sides) + backing back facing you. When you have attached the zipper, fold it (it is still inside out) and stitch the sides - do not forget to OPEN THE ZIPPER A BIT, so that its handle is WITHIN the pencil case (not outside - you would then have to chop it off!!). When stitching off the corners I used 1 3/4" "edge", NOT cutting it off (just zigzagged it neatly). I made one more yesterday and have run out of zippers ...Shall we start a pencil-case series?
