I am looking into starting a longarm quilting business but have absolutely no idea where to begin. I assume that I'll need a business license, something from the IRS & state tax commission & a way to price my work. But that's all kind of generalized information. Where can I fine specific info?
Thanks for listening.

I don't know anything about getting your business going. But where in Mississippi are you? My Dad's side of the family are from Chickasaw County. How about checking with your BBB in your area? I am sure they could give you lots of good advise!

Petlover,
Each state has different guidelines. Here in Minnesota we don't have business licenses. Here, the first step was to fill out a certificate of assumed name. That has to be posted in a newspaper for a couple of weeks before it can be finalized. You have to get a tax id number for collecting state sales tax. There are other things here but you need to find out what the Mississippi guidelines are. Where are you in Mississippi. One of my best friends on earth lives outside of Hernando.

Hey y'all. I'm in Lucedale which is between Hattiesburg to the west & Mobile AL to the east. We're about 35 miles north of Pascagoula. There seems to be plenty of longarm quilting business in this area from what others have said. I would just rather not be having to worry about taxes & such so would like to be legit.
Thanks for giving me advice.

Hello I'm from Calif. and I have just started a Logarm business my self (in June). I went to my county offices and asked how to start a general business. They had all the answers. Then I did some price checking from other longarm quilters. Sent out some price sheets and started out. Things are a little slow, but I expected that. Good luck to you and your venture.

I've just started a new long arm business in Utah. The best help I've received was from the local Small Business Administration and it was FREE. You can find your local SBA on the internet site. Just do a goggle search. That's what I did. Also, Linda's Electric Longarm Quilters book is great for everything about longarms. I'm sorry I don't have the name handy...I'm acutally out of town right now. I'll post the exact name when I return.
