Guttermann's thread (solid colors)
YLI variegated threads
Schmetz needles for machine quilting
I also only ever use Guttermann's thread for piecing or any sort of sewing. Completely eliminated skipped stitches and bobbin barf on my 30 year old Singer.

My favorite thread to sew and quilt with is Artful. I also love the schmetz needles sharp or jeans for quilting. My needle also depends on the size thread I use. If it is a quilt for show, I like silk thread. Geri

I have machine quilted many small quilts and I like to use very thin thread for both top and bobbin with a size 60/8 Schmetz needle.
The YLI thread made for Diane Gaudynski is the best I've found for the top thread. I use Bottom Line or equivalent for the bobbin and top thread when piecing.

I use 50 wt. Aurifil to piece with in either a neutral gray or beige. I've been using King Tut to machine quilt with but I may try something different as some folks say KT is too linty. I use prefilled bobbins. If I remember correctly they are polyester. I think the needle size in my quilting machine (Juki) is an 80.

I found out that Embrodiery machine needles are made to withstand fast speeds and the heat/friction. They are the best ones to use on a regular sewing machine for machine quilting.
