"HELP!!"
i have heard the term "1 less than a 1/4 in" alot and am very confused on what to set my sitch settings at. if anyone could clear this up for me that would be great.

I think what they are referring to is making the seam allowance a scant 1/4" - or 1 thread less than 1/4".

You can also cut 3 strips of fabric 1" wide maybe 5 or 6 inches long sew them all together press and they should measure 2 1/2" then you will know you have your 1/4" seam allowance correct. Joan

In the class that I just took - El taught us that it is one thread width less than a quarter inch. This is so after you have pressed the seam over you have a perfect quarter inch seam.
