Yes, grandma, the check spring is the spring on your tension knob. Not the pressure on the presser foot.
Sometimes on a Gammill you'll think all is well there but the thread could have jumped out of the tension disks or your check spring could be loose or broken without you knowing it.
The take up bar should be a finger's width from the bed of your machine. Your quilt shouldn't be so tight you can bounce a quarter off of it! LOL Not so loose it's drooping but kind of midway between those 2 extremes. How many practice pieces have you done on your system?
