Aside from the money issue, comes the size issue. Not of the machine but where you set it up. I would love a LAQ machine but I do not have the space. I have a Baby Lock Quilter's Professional (9 inch throat)on a Little Gracie frame and it takes a big hunk of space.
When it comes to the actual piecing I would think about whatelse I want to do with the machine. I like to embroidery but I have a friend who only wants to piece quilts. She has a sturdy machine that she just loves. I have an old Singer 400a that only straight stitches that does a great job on piecing. Some of the sewing machine websites have a place where you can compare features of the machines.
I like to do research. I read, bug the dealers, and then take a really long time to make a decision. Recently I had looked at embroidery machines and read Brother, Baby Lock, and Bernina all had similiarities but Brother was less expensive. I did not find that to be the case when I went to the dealer. The Baby Lock was actually less and I really liked the folks at the store.

I have a megaquilter I have only quilted one quilt so far.. on table top and have no problem with it. I use the knee peddle (lifts the pressure foot when moving the quilt) and it worked very smoothly for me. ( mine was a floor display so got a better deal)
in fact here I am quilting on it if you would like to see.
