Gwen, if you follow El's directions step by step it really is not as difficult as it seems. You just have to take your time and make sure you use the same ruler, or at least use rulers of the same brand, to cut out all you pieces. I think the key is just take your time.
The ruler trick is an important step when cutting out any blocks. Sometimes there will be a difference in measurements when using rulers of different brands. I think this was a disscussion a long time ago and since then I have done my best to stick to this ruler trick and my blocks seem to work out much better.
